TDI5: why absent in the US?

Petrol is cheap here. When it's twice the price of diesel, then maybe. Also, a lot of people still have the mindset of the loud smoky diesel trucks of the past. Granted, that's changing, but very slowly.

This is the part I don't get. I'm no scientist but it seems like it'd be a hell of a lot better for the environment if my DDII got 25mpg instead of 10mpg

You're asking them to think clearly and logically, without emotion.

As enamoured as our government seems to be with turning us European, it's seems to slip their minds that diesel is the norm across the pond.

Emissions and fuel economy are not the same thing.

right, and that has more to do with additional processes done at the refinery rather than engine technology

It's still less work at the refinery to make diesel than gasoline.

Whats the barrel percentage for Gas vs. Diesel.

You have to think about the emissions just to make this shit.

I think Audi would beg to differ with you. They've won every 24hrs of LeMans since 2006 in a diesel except for 2009 (which was won by a diesel Peugot).

What do you mean barrel percentage? One of the main dings against diesels in the old days was the particulate matter. How many newer diesel cars or even semi's do you see spewing any smoke at all? Hell, even my 1996 F350 with the 7.3l Powerstroke only coughs a small puff of white smoke at first start of the morning. It's a quad-cab dually with an 8 foot bed and gets 20 mpg empty and 15mpg with a 3200lb camper sitting in the back.

I think the sulfur recovery offsets the cracking requirements, and the barrel percentage depends on where its drilled.

I just picked up a 2012 VW diesel and it is amazing. Quiet, clean, and superbly efficient. 600 miles on a 14 gallon tank. I would absolutely LOVE a TD5 in my D2. 11 highway MPG is complete bullshit from a 4.6 liter V8.

The almost twice-higher mixture burning temperature in a diesel engine causes nitrogen to burn, and consequently increased NOx emissions. That alone is not a particular cause of concern, however, in its environmental zeal California Air Resources Bureau pioneered NOx emissions level requirement that is about 10 times more stringent than in Europe. EPA and the rest of the states followed suit, as they usually do.
There was no scientific analysis, no data, just a number pulled out of someone's ass.

Unless I'm mistaken, the V8TD in the Euro RangeRover is the same unit that was developed by Ford for the F150 / E-series vans for the US market, but they pursued the ecoboost instead for the F150, and are killing the E-series in favour of the European transit next year.

I recall a blurb in LRO about how they will have the TDV8 RangeRover stateside by 2014 however. Given the MPG achievable in Europe with their litres, it should manage 25mpg stateside.

Edit - the ford diesel was 4.4l, so not the same it would seem...

VW, Audi etc... will SLOWLY change minds, and yes, engine and emissions technology will overcome idiotic EPA rulings. But the masses won't go diesel until they get hit hard in the pocketbook. Don't get me wrong, I'm for cheap gas forever and don't even get me started on electric or hybrids.
