Anyone else have this problem? I installed a Terrafirma medium duty 2 inch lift kit 15,000 miles ago on my truck. The truck actually lifted 3 inches. The supplied shock was rated for stock or up to 2 inch lift. first time in the woods with it, BAM.

Not terrafirma but I had that issue with bilsteins. Bummer… another brand of shock that broke in this manner. After experiencing this I cut off the bottom cup to give it more play.

Wow. Your Rover is really making you work for it. I also got the same kit way back when. I didn’t have one come apart but lost the oil out of it. It started leaking in the first year. Thought I got exactly what I paid for. The springs lasted a while but are definitely sagging now. I have a set of Ironman springs but haven’t had the time. I now run the heavy duty KYB’s. Much better. But honestly I am sure there are better shocks out there. I thought there was a thing where OME shocks would break an eyelet for one reason or another. If your stock stops are in good shape then I think your a victim of value engineering.

Sorry to hear that. I picked up the same Terrafirma setup for my rig in 2016. My only issue was the amount of surface rust after a short time.

Yeah it sucks but it’s not the end of the world. My dilemma now is do I put the same shock back on the break again or do I replace all four with the terrafirma long travel shock or do I just bite the bullet and put the long travel fox shocks on the truck and never look back haha

The TF spring rates are not like-for-like with other manufacturers. I had a set of TF light duty springs on my Disco for a couple years before replacing them with OME MD (front) and MD-HD (rear). The ride quality on the TF springs wasn't bad, but I find the OMEs are much better. I've had the same set of Blingstein shocks on my Disco for about ten years and they've been trouble free with excellent dampening qualities.

It's VERY important that the top mounting washers point/cup inward! I even considered removing the cupped washers but was able to yank the shocks outwardly enough I called it safe.

Also the TF instructions say to remove the lower axle bushing cups. I chiseled both top and bottom lower cups off the axle.. On full extension they seemed to bind on mine so off they went.

+50mm shocks and extended bump stops and I haven't had any issues yet.. knock on wood!

When my billsteins broke I had a new set of unknown origin shocks that came with another D1 I purchased. They were just loose without a box thrown in the cargo area. After doing some research I determined they were KYB… for a toyota pick up. But, they measure the same length as the billsteins so I decided to give them a go. I have no complaints other that they are a bit more firm.

i used the same set up as you however i got the -2 inch rear mounts and front towers just to be safe .
I was considering this route because the front towers are getting crusty anyway. Rear mounts aren't bad but I'd match them to the front as far as lowering. Then I could just replace one shock and be on my way.

This sounds par for the course with Terrafirma. Surprisingly enough I had a buddy break a new ome shock. His is only 2" lift. It also destroyed his tire went it broke. I guess quality isn't what it used to be. That said. I've been running fox 2.0 emulsions on my D2 for 10+ years and they've been great. I highly recommend them.

That looks like a misconfigured bushing/washer/cup configuration. The later axles with bushing cups (as pictured) require a completely different set of bushes and washers than the early no-cup setup. To make it even more confusing, aftermarket shock manufacturers don't specify which axle their included bush and washer kits are intended for.

I elaborated a bit more here: https://nas-row.com/index.php?threads/rear-shock-bushing-orientation.6170/post-61556

In a misconfigured scenario the washer/bushing gets destroyed or the shock breaks at one end or the other.

Terrafirma is crap.

Unfortunately the Bilsteins break too and I’ve seen the OMEs (the older, higher-quality OMEs) break on trails too. I always ran OME (old and new) and never had a failure. And I sure wasn’t easy on them.
