In the beginning there was mud and flood. Then, there was heat and dust. SCARR events seem to be getting quite the reputation of throwing the best ? and worst ? that Mother Nature has to offer, to test the will and determination of Rover aficionados and their vehicles.

Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area is the setting for the annual Springtime event that pits man and machine against the old gal to see who really is up to the challenge. It?s also a great opportunity to put faces with names and meet other folks who share the same passions for periodic detours from paved surfaces. For you folks who may be unfamiliar with the acronym, SCARR stands for ?South Central Area Rover Rally,? which returns to East Texas the weekend of April 7-9.

This is the perfect opportunity for newbies as well as experienced Rover folk to get back in touch with the environment and get a taste of the true nature of Land Rover.

Back in their element, Rovers will find a full complement of trails and activities for enthusiasts at all levels of experience and confidence.

My fondest memories of SCARR 1 were of the late Ross Mabey who was my gracious host for the day. Not once did he seem to mind my constant jumping in and out of his Disco for pictures of the trail runs and never did he complain about all the mud I was dragging back in.

The torrential rains that continued to fall just added an imaginary diamond to the trail rankings but the cool cooperation of the caravan members on each run drew positive praise and confidence from participants eager to continue their treks.

Year two delivered a complete 180 of climate at the Barnwell facility as well as more Rover enthusiasts from a wider area. While most enjoyed the great photo ops provided by several runs up and down ?Twister,? many were treated to leisurely-paced trail runs that grouped attendees together by experience level.

Now it?s time to get ready to make new memories as SCARR 3 draws near. What will Mother Nature deliver this time around?

No matter what your experience, SCARR has something for everyone from spirited trail runs to great fellowship and camaraderie. Come out and meet folks that share the same passions for life and adventure as well as their love of the Land Rover heritage and get ?SCARRed for life.?
