I just want to get a feel for how many people have had head gasket issues in their discos.

I have a 1999 DII with 95,000 miles needing a new hg according to a compression test.

I just did my 00' DII at 70k. According to the dealer it needed gaskets... However, I can't confirm that it really needed it. Since I had the engine torn down for a valley gasket and timing chain, I figured why not. Seems like most Disco's end up having the heads done somewhere in the 80k range.

Interesting timing for this poll -

2001 158k and counting no head gasket and no leaks. I keep getting a misfire on cylinder 3 which my local wrench thinks - it is time. No compression test yet - time will tell, no coolant loss etc. I did find a cracked vacuum hose fiting on the manifold which could be the culprit - heard you can replace with metal?

did head gaskets on my 95, turned out to be a cracked block/liner

I'm told my 96 had the head gaskets done.

Had head gaskets replaced around 65k. Had it into the dealer for warranty service and told me the headgaskets needed replaced. I didn't complain since it was under warranty. Paid a little out of pocket to have it done the right way with heads and valve seals. I really doubt it was the head gaskets though. Oil looked fine, coolant level was fine, and it ran fine.

New to me 96 DI SD (no sunroofs, manual seats, hurray) 168k miles, bought it with a broken torque converter adapter plate. It drove on to the lot. Rather than pull the trans I decided to pull the engine to re-seal it. Nearly every gasket was leaking. When I pulled the intake I see one of the pushrods on cyl 1 is severely bent. The inside of that cylinder was steam-cleaned and the intake valve was bent. Not really sure what occured first. Don't know the history of the truck But the rest of it is in really good shape. Hope to have it back together within a week or two.

p.s. Hey look I hit member status!

I have a 97 with 110K and I think I need head gaskets. So I haven't done them yet but probably will very soon.

And luckily, PT is having a great sale on a HG kit so it helps ease the pocketbook pain for do-it-yerselfers.

96 d1, 145k and overheated once, no HG failure so far.

For the HG's needing replacement before 100k, was there any specific culprit or just a strange misfire one day? I tow boats hard all summer and half ass overheated it due to a leaking coolant overflow container.

Has everyone done the HG replacement themselves?

Had seeping head gaskets in my 4.0 D2, slipped a liner without overhearting. Dropped in a 4.6, with all new gaskets. No problems......
