Heres the story... Bought a 65 series IIa a little less than two months ago, replaced the brake parts, fuel pump, dropped the fuel tank and cleaned it out. I rebuilt the weber carb, changed out the distributor cap and rotor arm (ducellier type) and adjusted the tappet gaps last week. Found one rod(??) was not connected to the tappet and causing a major tap. Anyways, the truck has driven great for the last few days, got up and drove it to work this morning, no problems at all. After work, ~9 hours later I got into the truck and it cranked right up, idled fine, and then as soon as I put it in gear and gave it gas it would sputter and die. It would idle in first and drive the truck at 5 mph, but no more. It would also rev up and not miss a beat as long as the truck was in neutral. Eventually it got to the point where it would go for a few seconds, then go in short spurts, sputter and die. Anyone have any ideas what the issue may be? Help please...

It sounds like a plugged up fuel system, I know you cleaned the pickup tube , Have you changed out the fuel filter.
Did you replace the accelerator pump in the carb? check for leaks around the base of the carb.

Cleaned the fuel tank, and the pick up, replaced the fuel line and put in an inline fuel filter, the gas in the bulb on the fuel pump looks perfect, I will check the the filter. As far as the carb, it will rev and idle all day, I can rev it at full throttle as long as its not in gear. Its only once you put it in gear and give it gas that it conks out... oh and I rebuilt the carb, so I replaced the accelerator pump.

What is the best way to tow my series truck? I was gonna try and drive it to Atlanta, but it just will not run right. Can I tow it on a dolly with the front wheels up? Also, I think Im going to put a new carb on, which brand should I go with? I have a Weber 34ICH and it's a PITA.

The cylinder head will have this square-ish, raised boss near the carb between it and the valve cover. It may (or may not) have an "8" stamped on it. The 7:1 head is flat, 'cept for the bosses around the various bolts.

You could flat-tow it. Dial out the front hubs if so equipped, or remove the front propshaft at the diff. Same for the rear.... There's a dataplate on the bulkhead telling you "how to" tow, put in neutral case, yada, yada, but I've never trusted that.... The transmission can and does get "wound up" to the point of locking up if you do it wrong.

Just don't do what a fiend did: he'd flat tow behind his motorhome all the time with dial-out hubs front and rear. The parking brake doesn't work when you disengage the tow ...as he soon found out. ;)

I once had an ignition coil fail with similar symptoms. I could sit in neutral and rev it all I wanted, and it idled great, but as soon as I put any load on it would die off. I thought it was a fuel problem.... I swapped coils in frustration.....

For the towing I'd suggest renting a u-haul trailer. It's pretty cheap and you can do a one way rental if you don't want to two it back to Bama. I one way'd one from Monroe NC to home when I brought my IIa home and it was about $100. If you two it back to Auburn is will be much less.

Wait...you're in Greenville?

I just left that place and I thought it was only me and Kennith with serious rovers down there...

btw, Kennith is a good wrench to have around if you need a hand.

Dude, you'd know a LOT of people if you went to MAR.

I had a choice...MAR or URE. MAR only comes around once a year, Uwharrie is practically in my backyard. I went last weekend.

Ill try to go next year.

Well it very well may be the coil, but what really annoys me is that it will drive great for a day or two and then start sputtering. It doesn't really die anymore, but it bobs or bursts forward then slows and sputters then bursts forward again. It had a bent push rod which had come loose earlier, I put it back on and then it came loose again yesterday, I got it straightened back out today when I looked at the tappets and it idled much more smoothly than it has since I've owned it. Going to drive it tomorrow afternoon...
