The strangest thing happened to me...

I was filling up my disco at the gas station the other day. The gas gauge was almost empty but the light hadn't come on. I had put about 260 miles on the take which is about normal. While I was filling I got to 8 galllons and the automatic trigger on the pump stopped. I restarted it know I had about another 12 gallons to go. A half a gallon later it stopped again. I thought it was strange but kept going. And on the final time and at about 9 gallons gas spilled out over the car and ground. Well I thought full was full and I guess I'll just pay and go. The gauge only went to half full.
I would ignore it as a fluke this time but both the trip meter and the gauge indicated I was almost empty. And then when I was done the amount of gas and the guage indicate I was only half full. But gas still came out of the top.
Any ideas?

quick update

The next day after a quick trip to the mountains, I went to fill up to see if I could fill the tank. The tank took about 15 gallons and filled right up as if nothing was wrong.

Some stations got those automatic shut-off thingies completely broken - they either dont work or shutting off as soon as you directing fuel stream against the wall. Happening to me very often on both of me trucks - just has to wiggle filler nose a bit to keep pumping thats all.

Common Problem

From what I've read this seem to be a common problem with Discos. Something about how the hoses are routed from filler to tank. Somewhere I read that there was a tech note of this and a suggested dealer fix. Try contacting a local dealer and ask if they know anything about it.

I am glad to know it isn't just me anymore. I have always had to fight to get gas in my disco. You would think as often as it "asks for gas" it would be a little more receptive to recieving it :D

I hate that about the Disco.

I have a list of 3 or 4 gas stations that don't seem to have any trouble filling up the beast. So many times I've just left in frustration after spending 5 minutes to get 5 gallons.

Wandering aimlessly
Ive only had this probel once in NJ, where we have attendants fill up for us. When im on the road though this happens to me about half the time. It happens on my boat alot too. Back pressure flips the kill switch or something. I just take it slow, untill i put in as much as i think i need.

This happens to me fairly often. When it happens, I just lift the handle up so that the nozzle is pointing down as much as possible. I think when you turn the pump on and leave it there the gas gurgles around, but if it is pointed straight down that doesn't happen.

Mike,

Same thing used to happen to me in my Disco II. I finally got took it to the dealer and
they made an alteration to the filer neck. I'm not sure what they did, but it worked.
I guess there was a service bulletin on it because they fixed for free.

Thanks that's a ton of help. Know I just have to set aside 4 hours to drive up and back to the dealership  Luckily work is sending me that way tomorrow. So I can go during my "lunch" ;) and get paid milage for it!
