Inside the kit that costs about $805 is a switch pack that by itself costs about $104. I would say that I fix 7 out of 10 trucks with just the switches , and cleaning the 2 grounds in front of the air cleaner box. Most of the time the problem is fairly intermittent and if you took those switches out and measured them they would appear ok. Once in a while I see them with a hard fault. This is what I usually recomend when the shuttle valve fault is the reason the three lights are lit. I go in and replace the switches for 1.5 hours/and 1 hour of diagnoses. If the fault comes back I go back in and do the valves for 1 hour. If I have to do that then I take the switches from the complete kit and put them back into the box from just switches and get them off the repair order. Sometimes its fairly hard to duplicate the fault and I could drive it 100 miles and not know if its fixed or not. This is a fault that gets the old shotgun treatment a lot because of that.

The only issue I have with that is whenever there is a shuttle valve faul, you stopping distance on an emergency stop is greatly increased. Rather than please a customer with a low quote, I rather replace both for liability reasons. Also I live in lawyer country so I gotta protect my self from such leaches. Also if you just want the lights gone, just overlay the wiring since its the contacts that go bad
I agree with you on just doin the switch, but would you want to find out the hard way with a loved one driving the car?

I understand what your saying. California has some very strong liability law that has screwed a lot of mechanics to the wall. I havent seen a truck stopping distance get longer because of the shuttle valve fault. Do you mean because anti-lock brakes wont come on ? I get more scared by wheel speed sensor faults that cause the peddle to drop and the truck to coast thru a stop. I think if his fault is now a hard fault the switches will measure different than the new set out of the box and the problem may be fairly easy to see when compared to the new switches. I do get what your saying though and maybe I should rethink some of it.

That's way high, with a truck that neglected you'll probably find a number of unknown issues shortly after purchase.

This tells the OP everything that they need to know about the truck in question.

just because the Key Fob does not work, along w/ Amigos and Leaky valve cover does not necessarily mean the truck has been neglected.

My rear door locks are slow and my headliner sags....... does that mean I need head gaskets and a front drive shaft ?????

Maybe;)

Very few people maintain these trucks to the standard that they require. And I include myself in that group.

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a 99 discovery woodcote green (beautiful color) with 116,000 miles.. It drives great, but has a few lights stuck on the dash (3 amigos), no alarm fob, ac does not work and needs valve cover gaskets (I can do this).

The truck is in pretty decent shape.. It needs valve cover gaskets, there is a patch of rust on passenger side door (lower about the size of an orange) a few surface scratches, face plate is missing from radio (can i reinstall factory radio) and the AC does not blow cold (i never use it)

disconnect battery to take out key? whats that all about?

To make this truck totally right could easily require $2k+ depending on your level of DIY. Then you'd have a $4k truck. There's a ton of Discoveries available for sale, why buy one that's overpriced and needs a lot of work?

The rust alone would make me bail. I can fix most anything mechanical. Doing body work and painting is not something I would want to tackle.
