Thinking Magnaflow

folks,
While my cats and exhaust did pass NJ emissions, I'm thinking ahead and thinking Magnaflow.
Its roughly $1100 for new cats and catback exhaust, without labor. From what I've gleaned, it's no miracle hp boost,
but mine's probably original 1996,so might be a good time. There's gotta be some real-world benefit, no?
So I'm trying to save $$ by buying used and having a shop do the welds.
If I buy used cats, can they be welded on without touching the sensors?
Or is replacing the sensors a good idea anyways?
Are Magnaflow universals all high-flow? Is Magnaflow the most "refined, non-obnoxious" sound vs. others?
All part of gradually upgrading my D1 1996. She's a keeper
Idle ok and runs well - should I just leave it alone then? Don't really plan any off-roading.
Any tips/advice most welcome. Thanks in advance.

If you want to upgrade your Disco starting with used cats is not a recipe for success. You can get a new aftermarket Y-pipe for about $400 shipped. Not much practical benefit to a Magnaflow exhaust on a 21-year old truck unless you love the sound and that's your main motivation.

$1,100 can get you some much better improvements for your vehicle - like your cooling system and Defender front brakes, for example. If the exhaust isn't causing problems now I'd leave it alone and save your money for the other mechanical issues that will arise sooner or later.

Thanks. Copy that. Sound, while tempting, was never a good enough reason for me.
Also, I meant not used cats, but unused w/ box types on craigslist and whatnot.

Guess the main theme is: what are 'reasonable' upgrades for my D1.
Can you elaborate on cooling systems?
also gathered I could replace the timing chain?

Cooling system - ballpark on the prices. Replace all these things and you can rest easier knowing that one of the most important systems to the longevity and health of your Rover will perform reliably for years (with 2-year intervals on the coolant, of course).

radiator $300 - $800
water pump $150?
fan clutch - $50 - $100
hoses $50
thermostat $15
coolant $30

You can install Defender front brake calipers and rotors for under $500. This is a popular upgrade that improves stopping power.

Magnaflow makes drop-in Y pipes with cats for Rovers.

Do not expect a perfect fit the first time around, though. Once you do get one that's lined up right, it's fine. They don't seem to mind returns and replacements, and it doesn't take long. Annoying to have to do it, but whatever.

They aren't overly expensive, and the cats are solid quality. At the very least, the cats themselves are worth buying.

Cheers,

Kennith

yep that's the one - $638. If I chance upon new cheaper cats, I'll have those welded in and keep my Y. thanks
