I remember myself staring at a creek in AZ two weeks ago... with thunderstorms all around the place. Then I remembered one other white D1 buried in quicksand, and backed off.

It's more like liquefaction. Earth absorbs so much water from underneath, it turns to mush.

FWIW, the creek I considered crossing was Moenkopi Wash near Blue Canyon. Just dug up this fine plot from USGS site:

In a wash with median flow of 0.0 cubic feet per second, it reached 450 cf/s on July 27 when I considered crossing it.

one does not really need to know their limit to know not to cross that. the only way to cross a stream of that speed nd depth is luck.

this stuff is common here. the worst is when you are caught unexpectedly. to make the decision to cross is silly.
