Are there any rover 4.0, 4.6 engine that had top hat liners factory installed? Or are these strictly aftermarket?

that's kinda what im trying to decide which direction to go. I just picked up the vehicle knowing it was going to be a project. great shape and zero rust.. very worth it.. but, if I go used motor I don't know the history... if I go rebuild existing motor, I can do good liners and such and know im going forward with a solid motor... I cant do the machine work obviously, but most everything else ill save money on that,... and did compression on the passenger bank and they were all 90 ish.. I know that seems low, I was chalking it up to the harbor freight gage.. but im not sure what failure would cause the whole bank to be low, and the same....

I'm assuming this is on your 2004?

I would also assume your 3.9 runs fine.

Top hats are big money.

A good block to start with are not big money.

Moral of the story? Save your cash and buy a good 4.0 block and put your 4.6 guts inside it.

Thats a lot of work with high risk unless you know for a fact that the block is good.

I roll with top hats...

What good are top hats if the block is already cracked between the 5/7 cylinders?

Seems the risk is equal.

I've had multiple machine shops tell me that just pressing in a new liner will take care of a crack. With a top hat liner, the combustion gases would not likely go into the cooling system if the block has a small crack because the edge of the liner sits further away from the combustion chamber.

Not certain if all the liners do this but some have an o-ring placed at the bottom of the liner to prevent a cracked cylinder from leaking into the sump.

The Camshaft kit we have engineered is level 2 performance made here in the US and ground specifically for use in the Rover V8. The cam has a much higher Rockwell than the stock Rover cam

I'd run based on the cam info on their site

I just tore down my 4.0 that I bought from them about 8 years ago. Every piston had the ring gaps in line. No attention to thrust side. This is in addition to using cosmoline as engine lube and leaving out all of the dowel pins in the short block.

These are NOT the people you want building an engine for you.
