Does the standard LR3 hitch accept a 2" receiver? 2" drop?

2" receiver is correct. Harness is about 1hr but I cheated and had the dealer do it. Bad things happen when I touch anything electric.

Can't be too hard though.

Edit: Forgot to mention - 2" drop looked a bit low to me. Fit the trailer I was using, but would be very low for many.

On installing the wiring harness: You have to remove the light, IIRC. It's plug and play after that. The instructions (mine had only poorly drawn diagrams and no text) left a lot to be desired.

It took me less than an hour.

Got the hitch all mounted up. Tami ended up getting the LR hitch and wiring kit from Will Tillery - a lot less than what LR wanted for it!

The hitch on the trailer she is going to pull sits 18" off the ground when level. With the LR hitch on the truck in "normal" height, that called for a 4" rise Reese hitch. The top of the hitch, or the bottom of the ball, now sits exactly 18" off the ground.

In order to fit the hitch with her 285/60/18 tires, she had to remove her 4, rubber bump stops under the truck where the spare tire rests. This was done with a pair of Channel Lock pliers and a 10mm wrench. Simple.

I also took a little extra time and carved out a spot for the hitch, ball, and hitch pin in the foam tool trey under the rear deck lid in the cargo area.

Even with the wiring for the trailer plug, total job time was about 1.5 hours. If I had to do it again, I think I could do it in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Dan your work looks fine, but what a messed up looking set up that Land Rover gives you to work with. Looks like something the backwoods boys would do.

Trailer Brakes.

Don't need them at the moment, but was looking into it. There is a plug under the dash near the brake pedal that is rumored to be a brake controller lead. Looks like you can buy a $9.99 standard harness/pigtail to plug into this plug that will then allow you to install a brake controller of your choice.

My question is, if this plug is utilized (and why not) will any additional wire(s) need to be ran to the rear of the vehicle if the Land Rover trailer wiring harness is used? Did Land Rover actually make some worth a shit? Or, am I missing something here?

You will not need additional wires. I use a Prodigy controller. The Ford pigtail fits the plug under the dash. The rover harness works great (surprise!!).

That's the strangest factory hitch setup I think I've ever seen. I'm going to have to look more closely at an LR3 next time I see one.

Adding trailer brakes took all of 20-seconds. No really, 20-seconds and I was done.

Under the dash there is a grey, square plug just hanging there. Well, it's not hanging, it's attached to a piece of plastic, but it's quit obvious.

I used Hopkins part number 47715, Brake Control Pig Tail. This pig tail is intended for the following:
F-150 96-06
F-250/F-350 94-04
Expedition
Full Size Van 94-98, 2006
Excursion 99-04
Explorer 02-06

One end of the wiring harness (pig tail) plugs into the LR3, under the dash, near the brake pedal, to the grey, square plug.

The other end plugs directly into your brake controler.

I used a Hopkins 47235 Brake Controler with quick disconnect.

I could not find a great place to permently mount the brake controler in the LR3. So, the quick disconect is awesome in this case and a well noted feature.

Sorry, it's raining, so no pics right now.

Total job cost under $100.00.

Everything seems to work just fine. We went for a drive today, got up to 70mph or so, did some hills, etc.. Hills KILL the 6cyl. 55mph is about all it wanted to do without pushing the motor. Everything else felt comfortable.

Trailer brakes worked flawlessly.

Tami's is a six banger? I find that Command Shift's sport mode compensates well for hills, and then there is always third gear which is very touquey. Looks like a nice set up.

FWIW, for last year's Rally in Montrose, another person towed his D90 behind a V8 LR3 and had similar issues/complaints getting through the Fish Lake mountain range in Utah.

Try switching cars around. I bet the 6-cyl would perform a lot better. You may even be able to push it to 60. ;)

PS: Rumor has it that bigger, 5-liter petrol V8s are in the pipeline for MY2010 across the range, including the LR3. The normaly aspirated version should make about 350hp and offer more torque as well.

LR3 pulled like a champ. It was no Duramax or anything, but running 75mph was not a problem, either.

From VA to GA, the LR3 got 9.6mph. That was also consistant with what the on-board computer was telling us.

Getting started was a little slow. 1st gear did not mind the load. 2nd gear hated the load. 3rd gear and up pulled very well. When in 1st gear, you had to wind the engine to about 4,500rpm's in order to gain any power in 2nd gear. The ratio jump from 1st gear to 2nd gear is very large.

Coming over the MTN's out of VA into NC was a solid 3rd gear pull at 55mph. I could have stressed the motor and gone faster, but the LR3 6-cyl did not seem to mind 55mph over the MTN's.

We leave Atlanta Wednesday evening for Texas. I have no doubt the LR3 pull this heavy load okay.

Dan, thanks for the info. I am assuming your are towing the D1 on an 18' trailer, about 6500#s? I am considering doing this with Leo's D2 instead of driving both on 700+ mile trips and your experience is very useful. I do have the 300hp V8 though.

How are the electric brakes working now?
