I just recently had my transmission replaced in my '97 Disco 1 (thanks for the help from all the discoweb members on info regarding that job) and now will be driving the car to Florida. There is a volvo p1800 there I would like to tow back on a Uhaul car dolly and would like any advice on towing long distance with these trucks.

Is there any need for a trans cooler upgrade or anything I should watch for while towing the car? Any advice on doing this without killing my new ZF HP22?

Thanks a lot,
Samer

i dont know of any transcoolers for rovers, it already is going through the radiatior to cool. weight of car and trailer combined would be helpful. your truck is rated for 5500 in hi, which is what range you'll have to be in obviously. i've never pulled more than 3000 and i definetly could feel the difference. luckily it will be mostly flat on your trip, i think you'll be fine, it will just take a long time. my .02

When you get it back here post some pictures of the P1800. Those cars rock!

Well the p1800 wieght looks to be 2215 lbs. and the dolly most likely 300-400? so i should be below 3000 lbs.

being my first rover I just want to make sure It's possible for a 14-16 hour journey to tow something like that. I bought it to tow my project cars - I have a 67 charger I'm working on too and that's a beast! so hopefully it can handle a little p1800.

So you guys think I can just hook it up and go huh?

3000 is really not much for a Disco. The good thing is that LR's are geared a bit better for towing than some (more powerful) american trucks.

The general rule for towing is to only use drive and not OD for trucks with autos. For 3000lbs you could probably use OD as long as your transmission is not hunting (constantly down/upshifting). Using OD with heavier trailers is an easy way to burn out an auto. Unfortunately I learned that one the hard way.

But to answer your last question. Yes, just hook it up and go!
