7,700 is in low range.... like pulling a boat out of the water on a ramp.

I believe DII is 5,000 or 5,500 in high (normal driving)

I tow a 3,500 boat with surge brakes fine. Just give yourself space to stop.

I've towed a snowmobile trailer w/ 2 sleds, it looked like the great wall of China was chasing me and also pull a double tandem w/ 2 dixie choppers.....my only suggestion.....own stock in Chevron or B.P. I don't care if your pulling 10 pounds or 5,000 the machine sucks my wallet inside out.

So what are the recommendations regarding towing my DI behind my DII from SE TN to Charlotte NC for URE!4 next month? I have access to a trailer with surge brakes (that I have used with the Discos before, but only to tow the DI like 10 miles) and also possible access to a car hauler (that you would pull a 2wd car with). I was thinking about using the car hauler and just pulling the rear half shafts on the DI...suggestions?

In Australia my book for my D2 says braked trailer 3500kg (ie over 7000 pounds) - high range; less off road. My 95 D1 says 4000kg.

My D2 is a 4.0 V8 Manual -autos have the same rating; its just that when towing really heavy on a steep hill I can start of in low with the manual and double shuffle the transfer case up to high at 40-60kph.

I regularly tow a 2 tonn dual axel boat set up - no problems with the 4.0 so the 4.6 would do that weight as a doddle.

Cheers

D2 with a Bosch 4.6

I know what the book says, what do you guys say?
Going out west.
I need to pull my 2000lb rock buggy on a 1200 lb trailer w/ brakes.

Is the D2 up to it?

It wouldn't be my first choice of tow vehicles, but I've towed a about that same weight with my D2 pulling a 16' Pace Cargo Sport trailer across the country - I found that cross winds were the thing I hated. A big gust would really want to push the rig sideways, oh - and a 53' semi blowing by at 80mph had the same effect.

Give yourself plenty of time (distance) to stop, plan on loving that right-hand lane, have lots of gas money and you'll be fine.

You'll be fine, I've towed my 3500lbs boat and 1100lbs trailer w/ surge brakes over Mtns to get to a neighboring states lake without any issues. As another poster stated just give yourself plenty of time to stop.

.

this IS what the manual states, BUT........ low gear shmow gear, I pull my boat (7000+)
in high gear all the time. I am only in low when I launch and retieve. I have had no issues. Keep in mind I am not trying to set any "stoplight grand prix" records.
