TPS problems.

I wasn't sure if I should put this in Parts Wanted sub-Forum or here, so I figured I'd try here first.

On my trip home for thanksgiving, my Freelander started surging while i was driving, and then the surge would be much more significant while trying to accelerate. I finally tried to accelerate down a rural road and the engine shut down and i coasted down to the shoulder. The oil light came on as i tried to start it so i put in a bit of oil i had left. I started it and it worked perfectly. I put in more oil over thanksgiving break. However, as I drove back to my university, the same problem broke out while driving down the interstate. then it shut down again after a while, so i let the engine cool down for a bit because i didnt think it could be the oil. Long story short, a man at a gas station(who recommended me this website) looked under my hood. I explained to him my problem and he stated that it was probably a problem with my Throttle Postion Sensor. i've looked all over and can't find any from any third-party non-dealership sources.

Can anyone help me?

1. Did the oil light come on and stay on? or just come on when the engine died?
2. Year, mileage of the vehicle?
3. Service history...meaning how are your plugs/wires, etc.?
4. When you let the engine cool down and then restarted....did it drive better when cold?

1. I noticed the oil light came on when I tried to restart it again after it died.
2. 2002, about 57500 miles
3. I haven't changed any wires or plugs since it was bought from the previous owner about a year ago.
4. It drove better, as in no surging. I've tried not to drive it too much because I have to do another ~300ish drive home for christmas break and am not sure if i can find the part before then.

are you sure you're not having transmission problems? what exactly does the "surge" feel like? i thought i was having tps issues on my freelander last winter. the tps for a freelander will cost you $158.79 from rockauto.com. that's probably the cheapest you'll find it anywhere. keep that website handy. they have other stuff you'll need if you plan on keeping your piece of junk freelander.

here's the thing though dude. when i was researching this crap last year i found out that tps problems are more prevelant in range rover classics. it's not known to happen that much in the freelander. i finally tracked my problem down to the cam position sensor. my problem was that the freeloader was sporadically leaving me stranded by not starting.

that doesn't sound like your problem, so maybe it is the tps, but i would check out other areas first, namely your piece of crap jatco transmission. when it fails, it kind of "surges" i guess.

let me know what you find out.

ugh I have had slight feelings before that it may be the transmission before but I really don't want to spend so much money on replacing it. I only want to keep this car long enough to get it fixed up enough so i can sell it again and buy something else. That's how long i need it to last me, but i'm not sure what i'm going to do until then.

and I'm not sure about shelling out another $200 on this car for a part that I may not need at all.

Where are you located? You might be able to find another Rover/Freelander owner or independent shop nearby to help you look at it and diagnose the problem...before you start throwing parts at the truck!

what makes me kind of doubt it's the transmission is that your engine shuts down. if it really is your transmission, i don't believe it should kill the engine. where do you live? if you're near a land rover shop you should get the problem profesionally diagnosed.

once you get if working reasonably well, unload it. that's what i'm trying to do.

i've got vis motor issues right now. i just bought a new power valve vis motor. hopefully that gets rid of my check engine light. if not, i guess i'll pay another $120 for the balance valve vis.

piece of junk freelanders.

I go to college in Melbourne,Fl (near Cocoa beach) but I Live in Miami. The thing is, I recently took it to a LR dealership during thanksgiving because the Service Engine Soon light was on (turned out to be air/water evaporating into the gas tank since i didn't have a gas cap for two months. They didn't find anything else wrong with it, which is wierd. I've been told the TPS can take a beating, so I'm hoping it lasts me a round trip from here to home and back . eek.

well ,my TPS is officialy broken. it took me 8 hours of the engine stalling every 10 miles or so to make a 3 hour trip. Pushing it around in neutral every so often didnt really help either. gonna have to buy a new TPS soon.

Do you have what looks like the original battery? Low voltage will make the Freelander do lots of weird things, like surge and strange ODB codes. Its easy to check.

Post this over at muddyoval.com, they are a lot more civil and knowledgable over there when it comes to Freelanders.

Sooooo.... the Early 1987 Nissan Pathfinder wasn't the only 4wd to use the POS JATCO transmission.... Mine broke, and I learned from Nissan that they replaced it with a heavier duty transmission later in the same year because of the problem with the JATCO's.... I think they are made in France.

TPS problems?

I know. Obviously he didn't get the memo that he needs to put the cover sheet on his TPS reports.

No, I have not read any part of this thread. I love Office Space
