Transfer box reseal

On the LT230 transfer box, is anyone using gaskets or just using a metal to metal product? I bought a seal kit but no seals came off of my box when I took it apart. I would like to not use the seals unless it’s important for a depth tolerance on any of the shafts. Loctite 574 is what I plan to use if I don’t use the gaskets.

If you’re not going to reset preloads then you need to use whatever was on there before (ie gasket or rtv)

Actually you can typically leave out the gaskets in most areas as the preload is for new bearings and as they wear the preload is gone and there is room to snug it all back up. I am not condoning this to someone that does not have experience with rebuilding the lt230 because you want to know what your feeling when you turn the shafts but typically you can get away on a reseal with leaving out the gaskets in most of it. Again it comes down to experience with rebuilding them to know if its ok. It is a pretty forgiving tcase and easy to rebuild.

Well I’m currently waiting for all my parts to show up. I’ll put it together with the shop manual and without the gaskets and see what it feels like. I suppose I’ll have to ruin this box a couple times before I get the feel for what it should be. Lol I’m alright with that. I just want it to be right as it can be.

LT230 does not use joints, and the used sealant is loctite 598 or loctite 5900. Loctite 574 is good, but black sealants are for these gap size and aply method is indicated in rebuild manual.
Additionally you will need some loctite 242 in order to seal some threads from lower screws as indicated in overhaul manual. If not, you will have leaks in each of them.

Regards

After a little more reading, up to serial number 288709E, use a gasket dry. After serial number 288709E use Hylosil RTV 102 or equivalent. And Loctite 290 or equivalent for the bolts. Thanks for the help everyone.
