Transfer case filler

How on earth is anyone supposed to remove the transfer case filler plug? I can't get a socket or an extension to it because the big driveshaft brake drum is in the way, along with the parking brake cable. Anyone have any ideas? This is for a '99 Disco II, in case it matters.

On my D1...

Sorry, not sure about D2, but on my D1 there's just enough room to squeeze a ratchet up there without a socket on it. My filler plug has got a square hole in it so there's no socket required. I slip the ratchet between the brake drum and the T-case while pushing the rubber casing out of the way. It's tight but just fits. Hope this is some help.

Use a tool found in sprinkler section of harware store, used to back-out PVC risers, heads etc. Once the ratchet breaks the filler plug loose, this little T-handle tool, fits nicely and backs-out and replaces the filler plug, then use the ratchet to tighten.

I went looking at ACE hardware today but couldn't find anything that looked useful, and I didn't know what to ask for. Do you have any idea what this tool would be called?

Thanks for the help.

Puppy - I use a 4" extenion on the ratchet and sort of jam it in there - it doesn't fully seat but has always been close enough to loosen/tighten the plug.

Puppy, it should be in the irrigation section, you know with sprinklers, PVC fittings, pipes. The name of it? About 5" tall, T-handle at one end, other end looks like reverse-thread die-cutter head. Ask the person how does one remove short PVC threaded insert from a pipe and I bet that will light their bulb and help locate the tool.
