Transfer Case Noise?

I have an intermittent noise coming from the transfer case while driving. Sounds like a pit full snakes hissing and it will stop if I steer to the left but returns as soon as I return the wheel to center. It does not stop or change if I put it in neutral and seems to dissipate after driving for 10 miles or so. Any ideas?

The truck is an 01 d2 with cdl...

Maybe exhaust leak? Mine rotted out by the y-pipe and made the loudest hissing sound. I would check that first.

Thanks Lowwill for the response. I only hear the noise when driving as opposed to idle but I will give the exhaust a good once over to be sure. Anyone else?

I've got a good grinding noise/vibe coming from the general vicinity of the tcase area; I'm still working on it...:banghead:

It has been a rough road lately. I developed a rear end noise that was intermittent and found out yesterday my 4.10 ring and pinion is toast. Now I have an intermittent transfer case noise... I would like it to either stop or fucking break, that way I can fix it and move on!

You forgot to include the part about the hole you fucking drilled through your floor and console for the ghetto CDL.

Yeh, I would mention that but it has nothing to do with the fucking noise. If it did it would go away when you move the knob, yet it does not. It would also make the noise all the time, which it does not. As for the ghetto cdl, it is the best way to install one without going to either an 04 linkage or using an electronic setup.

Anything else?

Yeah, you should look at how the factory sealed around the tcase shifter and wonder why they did it that way instead of running it through a hole in the floor. And the body is mounted ON the frame while the tcase is mounted IN the frame on semi-flexible mounts. Moving or touching your CDL shifter with a bare hand does little compared to the various forces exerted on your highly modified trucks body, frame, and drivetrain while you travel down the road.

I bet I can make it stop with a fucking $4 can of great stuff foam. Hell I wont even use the whole can, just a little- then you can return it to Home Depot.

Your talking to the guy who drove around for 3 weeks with no tcase shifter or center console installed. And then slowly reinstalled it bit by bit to see how much quieter it would get.

I have the cdl shifter from a DI and it makes no noise. I cut the tunnel out and put the big piece of factory foam back in place. I would say your problem is power steering related. Turning left or right should have nothing to do with the transfer case.

Have you checked for snakes???

This might be a long shot but I had a wheel bearing go bad once on a non rover and it first started by making noise while turning in one direction and would go away as I turned the other way. This was do to load transfering on and off the bearing.

Can't find any snakes... I am starting to think it may be output shaft bearings which could possibly cause the noise to shift due to the suspension moving when cutting the wheel. My power steering is in a-1 condition but thanks for the ideas and response.

Wheel bearings where definitely the first thing that came to mind but the noise will change when you fiddle with the cdl linkage but will not go away so I am thinking whatever the problem is, it is resonating through the cdl linkage. I had the hubs checked with a fancy temp gauge the other day after driving and they where all the same temp so I think that is out. Again thanks for the response, I think I am going to just turn the radio up until something breaks.

I might go the route crown mentioned and try foam, by the time I am done getting rid of all the noises the damn thing will look like a parade float...

Just dont forget that the foam in a can expands to twice its normal size. Also ive found it helpful to wear gloves that go at least as far as the neck to avoid getting the great stuff on my person. The only way to get it off of your skin is to not get it on your skin!LOL!
