Mine is stuck.

What are my options in terms of donor vehicles or transfer case models? Is a D1 locker a drop-in replacement?

sorta...you will be better off with a old style LT230 that uses a cable driven speed sensor.

All the D1's use a electronic speed sensor and that wont be plug and play with the RRC.

What does it take to convert an LT230 with VSS over to cable driven?

dosent the cable drive gear actually get used to spin the VSS on the later models?

the 94 and 95 have a disco style VSS bolted right onto the TC

the early ones have the separate VSS driven by a cable.

Yeah, if my RRC is any indication, that early VSS is located on the driver's side frame rail close to the engine. A cable runs from the TC to that. The question is can you just simply convert the later style to the earlier style?

Im looking at a 90 RRC and started thinking about this too. The swap to an LT230 would be tops on my list just not too sure how to go about it. Any mounting issues? Handbrake linkage routing issues?

this swap is really easy. There is no problem using the cable drive. I suggest using the newer style parking brake assembly that comes with the disco lt230 and take the solenoid out of the top of the case.

Stuck as in the viscous unit in the borg is frozen? If so...

The cheapest and easiest is just to get a good viscous unit and swap it in the existing BW TC. I did that once for about $120 (including install). But when I found a good LT230, jumped on it, in case it ever locks up again... its been ~3 years and the BW is doing fine.

In the snow, I absolutely love the way the BW performs.

I converted my 93 with a tcase from a 97-98 d1. I only needed a front drive shaft from a disco1 (you could also use a Tom Wood or change it over the a d2 shaft if you want) and one of the tcase mounts from the d1 (i dont remember what side) you will also need the input shaft from the disco transmission and cut the consel to let you use the lock part of the new tcase. It sounds like alot of work....because it is.

The thing is that after you get all of that stuff together (even if its used) you will be over the price of just replacing the VC with a good used one or swaping the whole box with a different bw. If you have this stuff laying around like I did to putting the lt230 in it may be worth it.
