The transmission on my 1988 range rover is clicking away upon start up (cold or warm). It shifts into the gears fine upon cold start, but after it is warmed up and you try various gears is doesnt even engae them until i sit there and rev it up and then it might catch the gear. As i said it also makes a clicking noise as i do this. It clicks in every gear (including park and neutral). i have absolutly no idea as to how to diagnos the problem i dont even know where to start! Any suggestions?

Hi there,
I'm not the most knowledgeable person with regards to gearboxes but it the clicking noise could be some chipped gear therefor some metal parts in the box. It is quite common.

The difficulty with engaging gears could be down to bad trans fluid. Fluid should be a nice red colour. If it's brown and dirty then it's needing changed.

I would personally change the trans fluid (you will probably see some metal shavings come out with the old fluid). Make sure you buy a quality fluid. Changing the fluid is quite simple.

Best of luck,
DD

sorry, no luck yet, i changed the fluid and there is still a clicking noise and after its warm it doesnt go into the gears. so the promblem is still there. also when i try to drive right after cold start up, when it warms up and i accelerate is just stalls and makes the clicking noise (as usual). so im still looking for the answer. could it be the torque converter?

does the engine stall, or just the movement of the truck-under load? if its the movement, and you are sure that your clicking sound is not a tapping sound, and is coming from the ****** (eff censorship), you are probably gonna need to take it to your local rover mechanic for a new ******. you can get a rebuilt one for a decent price (or rebuild it yourself for cheaper, but this leaves more room for error if you are an amature)
oh yaeh- does reverse work ok?
keep us posted

Mike- i just got this mail through one of my groups and thought you might find it intersting. could certainly pertain to your situation... the guy was complaining about whining noise.

Jon

"I hate to bare bad news, but it sounds like the spline wear issue
rearing its ugly head. The transmission output shaft splines wear away
where they interface with the inside splines of the transfer case?s input
gear. There was an issue with insufficient oil circulation to the splines,
causing accelerated wear. The first indicator seams to be increased whine
from the transmission/transfer case area at highway speeds. Eventually it
will turn into a really nasty clunk if this is the issue, and if still
untreated, the splines will wear away to the point were the output shaft
will turn within the input gear and the truck will no longer move.

The really bad news is that the entire transmission needs to be
disassembled to replace the output shaft, and while the input gear alone can
be changed relatively easily in the transfer case, there is the possibility
that all the metal bits coming off the output shaft can cause bearing damage
in the transfer case.

If you rebuild, make sure you get a transfer case input gear that is
cross drilled for additional oil flow (Land Rovers latest solution), and run
some additional fluid in the transfer case (the input gear is at the high
point of the case). Good luck, and I hope I am wrong (Don?t ask me how I
know)

he's talking about the output shaft that mates the tcase to the ******. i doubt this is the prob, but thought i'd throw it up for info's sake.
the clicking is what i heard before 2 of my trannys went out- the third was just insta-kaput.

Thanks,
