Got a fairly serious failure, on the (so far) relatively trouble free 00 DII.

When you start the motor, it sounds like rocks rolling around in a dryer under the truck, the truck barely will move forward or reverse...

My guess would be the transmission...any other educated guesses? If it is the torque converter, would it be worthwhile replacing it only, or just throw a rebuilt trans?

I will have it towed over to the garage in the next day or 2..I would just like to get a little educated about the system so I don't sound like a total moron..lol.. Just like to know what the options could be

It could be the input gear in the t-case. The one that slides on the output shaft from the tranny. I have had this exact thing happen to me. I basically stripped the inner splines from the gear.

i would buy that...

Would this be a better or worse situation than replacing the transmission? (more or less $$$ to fix than the transmission??)

the gear itself was only around $100-200. It is pretty simple to put in, but i also found out that i had cracked my input shaft about 100 miles after i fixed the gear. So i ended up putting a new tranny in also. But i tend to start by fixing the least expensive component first instead of jumping right in with a couple thousand dollars.

My only concern is that the sound sounded like it was coming from the bell housing...which lead me to the torque converter... Have to see what the mechanic comes up with... I will have him check the input gear.

But if the input gear was stripped..wouldn't that cause the truck NOT to move at all? mine will move a LITTLE

If it's coming from the bellhousing or rear of the engine it could be the flex plate and slotted ring that is riveted to it for the crank sensor. I had that piece shear off on my '96 Disco. At first it sounded like rocks and I thought it might be a bad cat but it quickly stopped running all together.

Paul-I'll 2nd the t-box. Same noise when mine went, but unlike Mr. Bradford, I DO jump right in with both hands and feet tied and wallet dangling precariously from my back pocket.

cant be the Transfercase...nothing in the Transfer case is turning when you just start the engine.

either in the torque converter or the front cltch of the trans itself

Just got a call from the shop...it appears that the flexplate got destroyed...he replaced it and put the transmission back..everything appears to be OK now...Much better than having to replace the transmission...whew..close one..still 11 hrs labor + parts..but better than adding a transmission to the bill!!

Sounds like what happened to me. I bet the noise was the slotted ring that gets riveted to the flex plate. Mine was bent like a pretzel.
