My D1 will no longer shift to 4th gear. No matter how fast I go, no 4th gear. All other gears work fine, no slipping. It also seems to like to stick in 2nd, both accelerating and on decel, it sometimes will refuse to get back into 1st. Fluid is nice and clean, very red, no burning. Now I had this EXACT same problem about 35K miles ago while traveling, and had a used trans put in. Is this a common mode of failure for D1 trannys, or could there be something external that is causing it to fail in such a way?

when this unit was installed did the installer flush the cooler and lines? if not it may have all that residue from former failure just creating havoc.
how is the adjustment of the throtle kick down cable... on the other hand you may need to drop the t case and acces the governor... remove and clean. you may wanna do a fluid and filter change after but you new/used trans may be on it's way out.

I would try to adjust the kickdown cable first since that is easy. I had similar issues twice and both times they were the cable getting out of adjustment. Don't put the adjustment way out of spec just to get it to shift into 4th though as that may cause problems in the other gears creating wear and not addressing the real problem.
