Transmission fluid and filter

i recently purchase a 1998 disco with 177,000 on the drivetrain. All fluids have been changed minus the automatic transmission and transfer case. I have read on a few sites the transmission filter and fluid should not be changed in a tranny with that many miles. Is this fact or theory?

Theory - change it once by dumping only and refill. Drive for 10-20 miles and dump again this time doing the filter too.

Do NOT use any sort of flush, that really can dislodge things too quickly and plug a passage or plunger valve. The above method has worked for me many many (like at least 20-25 times) with no troubles.

That said, if you feel there are issues with it..... A fluid change probably will not help. Correct level and type of fluid will make a bigger difference.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I don't think there are any real issues. I just want to start ownership with all new fluids.
