Since LR made the transmission fluid so easy to change (it has a drain plug, unlike 99% of other auto trannys I've seen, and the filter so hard to change, do they expect that the typical maintenance will be a drain and fill?

It just seems so odd that they made dropping the pan so difficult to do.

Does anyone make a kit to put an external filter on the transmission so you don't have to drop the pan again? What about a modified crossmember that allows the pan to come out without removing the crossmember?

What have people been charged by a shop for a ****** service (oil and filter change).

Thanks

I'll see if I can make anyone care about this thread... :)

Anyway... Has anyone built a modified cross member that will allow you to drop the transmisson pan to do a filter change? The other option I thought of is to have flanges installed on the exhaust after the catalytic converters to allow two short section of pipe to be removed to get the crossmember instead of requiring the removal of the whole y-pipe.

Thoughts?

From what the parts guy at my dealer said.. the only time you need to drop the cross-member is on the 30k service.. at what point you have to spread the frame to drop it.. LR sent out a memo that after the 30k, on something like the 60k you only need to drain and fill..

Thats just going on what he told me.

Really Stecz, this is not that bid of a deal, well at least to me.
A couple of bolts and the x-member is out. A couple of more and sway-bar is lowered, last few and the y-pipes can be lowered. BTW, you don't have to remover y-pipes, just lower them. Yea, PITA just to change a filter, but thank goodness it's not a frequent mandate else you would not be asking your question since someone else would have already invented it and it would be discussed on this site.

Removing the cross member isn't a big deal, but removing the exhaust is a hassle, the bolts are way in there and I need extra bolts because the studs in the exhaust manifold will likely break (at least 1)....
