Transmission Noise?

I did a search, but did not find a similar problem. My 1989 RRC which I recently purchased is making a whining noise. I knew about the noise prior to purchasing the truck. It happens in reverse and drive as well as 1, 2, 3. Not Park or N. It does not happen at highway speeds once the transmission locks. The noise is similar to a power steering pump low on fluid. The noise is directly related to the gas pedal and vehicle speed under 55 mph. Sitting still it whines in drive and reverse. Once I get rolling the noise goes away, once it hits the next gear it comes back for a few moments. If I floor the gas pedal and make it downshift there is no noise. I changed the fluid and filter today and the noise is still there. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Just to make sure it's not the Tcase, let's rule it out. See if you can change the tone of the noise by moving the Tcase lever left and right. Also, using a long screwdriver on the Tcase lever knob, listen to the noise coming from the Tcase. Do this while you're the passenger and not the driver ;) If you don't hear from the Tcase lever the same whining noise, then it's the Transmission.

In my case, the whining noise came from an aging Tcase. Chain stretched, output bearing was ruined so it needed a rebuild. After that, all noises went away. The chain slapping was real loud when I decelled suddenly.

Good luck.

Thanks. The previous owner was told it was in the transfer case, which would be better for me because I have an Lt230 ready to go in.
