'95 D1, 166k and the transmission overheat light flickers on and off occasionally during normal driving. Transmission fluid is clean and at correct level. New transmission oil cooler, hoses and pipes a year ago. Transmission functions fine, no leaks, noises, slipping etc. I suspect a dodgy sensor but any other advice / experience with this issue greatly appreciated.

Mine was a '96 D1, so a different animal, but I had a bad sensor that would illuminate the warning light from time to time. Just like you, good fluid and good level. It's still going strong.
FWIW, the light is switched on by one or both different sensors - one on the transmission, another on the transfer case.
