transmission stutter when shifting

2001 disco2, Auto. 80kmiles on odometer, real mileage in low-mid 70's due to tires, gearing, etc.

Sometimes, when I go from 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th, it is a bit sluggish and slow to change gears, and I can feel it kind of stutter and hang onto either 2nd or 3rd before shifting. When I accelerate it doesnt feel like there is full power. But, Ill admit, Ive never driven another disco so I cant compare.

When I am driving, the transmission is somewhat loud, makes it sound like a diesel when accelerating. If I put it in neutral while driving and rev the engine- engine sounds perfect and no awkward noises. Theres only a noise when transmission is in gear and I can tell is it coming from transmission.

What causes this stutter? I am hoping its not the beginning of the end of the transmission, and only a solenoid or something.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Iv seen transmission torque converters and frt trans pumps cause problems like this, but it would be hard to tell what it is with out driving it. Iv seen MAF sensors cause similar problems with transmission shifting. With the bad MAF sensor there was no odd noise.
Hope this helps.

Is there any check engine light?
Is there a trans light on?

yea, i thought it could be the torque coverter. no CEL on. havent checked for stored codes though. by trans light, you mean the trans temp light? well, it was on a few times when offroading a few weeks ago when i was giving it a nice workout :). however, it was doing it before that, but not as much.
