Transmission Swap

1995 D1, 5 spd. I struggle with my transmission everytime I wheel - it's not difficult, just too many pedals to work to do obstacles crisply and cleanly, and I would really enjoy the ease of the automatic.

My dilemma is A)pick up a clean parts truck, and swap motor and offroad gear over, or B)swap the 5spd over to an automatic.

What are the pros and cons of each option, and most importantly, which one is cheaper and easier? Also, is there any interest in the 5spd when I am done?

Learning to drive a stick is not my problem, and I successfully wheel it everytime I go out. Nothing is wrong with my transmission, and I don't NEED a new transmission. I WANT an automatic. Which is the easier way to get there?

There are some people who really want a 5 speed disco. If you can find such a person, you can probably make a little more than normal selling the disco. Then go buy a clean automatic disco.

So this would probably be the easier of the two options?

bumper, winch, diffs with welded guards, 4.5 inch lift, steel wheels/tires, SD rack, SD ladder, Hella lights, snorkel, co2 bracket/setup in rear, SD tire carrier with hi-lift mount, sliders, steering stabilizer relocation bracket...this is the stuff that would need to be switched over

What size tires are your running? Since you have a 4.5" lift, I suspect big tires.

Unless you re-gear to 4.1, 4.3 or so, the larger tires will make driving slow and smooth over obsticles very difficult. Your crawl ratio is way worse than stock.

So which direction is easier to go, swapping the transmission or swapping the trucks? I am not worried about gears...my diffs/axles will either go to the new truck or stay with the old truck and new transmission.

Do you have stock gears now or did you already upgrade? What tires are you running? Big tires and stock gears will also suck on an automatic truck.
