transmission/torque converter question

I am attempting to put a newer transmission and LT230 (from DI) into my '90 RRC and have run into a an issue that need clarification on as the torque converters are different. On DIs, does the torque converter bolt directly to the flywheel or does it bolt to the flex plate?

The torque converter that came off of my '90 is shorter in height with a smaller nipple (technical term) than the one from the DI.

if i were putting a d1 behind a 3.9, i'd make the back of that 3.9 look like a d1....
