Transmission trouble

I stuck a block heater in my '99 Disco II this weekend. Did outside, damn could this weekend. Was below 0 most of the time. Replaced the water pump as well since it started to leak. Never going to buy a reman unit again.

Well, I decided to take for a spin this morning. It was about -5*F this morning. Was plugged in, so the engine was fairly warm. Pulled out of my driveway and started to accelerate.... the vehicle did not want to shift up. It started to act like it was stuck in a low gear and than jumped up, and just plain shift like crap.

Well I turned around it shifted better. Seemed to be working ok. I went back home verified the coolant level and decided to drive it some more. Now reverse does not work. The 4 forward gears seem fine, but when put into reverse it feels like it goes into gear. But when you give it gas nothing. I have no lights on so I assume that it is not a bad sensor.

Now, I found a 2004 4HP24 for sale locally for a good price with 15K miles but no lower mileage 4HP22s. I know they are about 1/2 an inch longer. Has anyone put one of these into an older Disco II? I would think that since my Disco is lifted my drive shafts are already affected by that. If I need to shorten and lengthen I have a shop nearby that can do it.

Should I just keep my eyes out for a 4HP22?

I had the same problem when my fluid level was low. It would shift but not in reverse and when it would shift, it was a hard clunk and not smooth. Also, I live in Montreal so we have been getting some pretty cold temps here and when the tranny is cold it takes a while before it shifts. As soon as it warms up it's fine tho. Check the fluid in the tranny because this sounds exactly like my headache last year!

Well, I checked the fluid level and it is full. I have never had it shift with a clunk before, unless I was really on the throttle hard, and only once in a blue moon did that happen. It shifts fine in all forward gears, but nothing in reverse. I little when in low range, but nothing that would get you up even a slight incline.

Since I am not sure about the mechanics of this particular transmission, it sounds like reverse and third are mechanical and should work even if in limp mode. I don't have any flashing lights so I have not unplugged the EAT ECU to test. So could I just loose the gear for reverse in this transmission? I don't have a schematic of it to look.

The other question I have is regarding the 4HP24, does it have the mount for the CDL? I have a Disco I CDL in mine. I checked and the 2003-2004 front prop shaft is only 1/4" longer that the 1999-2002 front prop shaft. So that swap should not affect the shafts drastically.

Do you have the shop manual? Landroverresource.com, download the manual, there is a decent section on transmission and different symptoms.

I have the Discovery Series II Workshop Manual. I will check out the link you sent. Thanks.

I might end up putting the 4HP24 in even if it takes some work, but since I have the Disco I CDL I need to get the transmission tunnel cover since I opened mine up for the CDL. Maybe they will have a 2004 CDL there. They did not think so.

So for simplicity I might just replace with a 4HP22 with about 80K miles

Hi,

do you get the 'R' on the dash when you put it in reverse ?

if not, you just need to change the XY switch on the side,

I do get an R on the dash when I shift into reverse. So I guess it is not that easy. Crap.
