I was originally getting P0741 and an occasional P730....I took the vehicle to Cowtown Rover in Fort Worth and he ran a free diagnostic...He told me that I needed a new transmission....HOWEVER I went to drive off and now it won't upshift from 3rd gear apparently...and got the F...the only code I'm getting now is P0783. Which is the 3-4 upshift code...am I royally **cked?

Kinda sounds like he reset the adaptions on a trans that was just about smoked. The adaptions slowly adjust to make up for a trans that's slowly failing and when you reset them it makes the thing just fault out like yours is doing now. I'm almost afraid to reset adaptions on old trucks just because of what your seeing. Did anybody ever check the fluid level in that truck? Sounds like its too late now.

There is a TSB that talks about codes in those ranges: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic108824.html

Solution is to replace the transmission unfortunately. I'm pretty sure you can install a used transmission, if you swap the TCM from the bad transmission valve body to the good used unit.... in this case you'd probably want to do the reset adaptives again, because they have learned the bad one.

The way we would fix that would be a new valve body, but I think you can get the solenoids aftermarket and fix this for a couple hundred bucks. You may still need a transmission, but that will likely take care of the p0783.

I drained off some of the fluid and it was pitch black.....I think this is where the E clutch fails...anyway. I'm looking for a used tranny with under 100k if anyone has one laying around or knows where I can get my hands on one for a reasonable cost. I'll swap it out and then attempt a rebuild on mine.

Jafir brings up a very good point. You will need to swap out the valve body before you stuff the used trans. That is the module for the trans and the truck won't like the vin that's burned into the replacement trans.

You can program the used transmission as new with SDD and probably with aftermarket scanners. I've put a bunch of used transmissions in LR3/RRS/RR.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'm going to just sit on it for a while. Short on funds, time and patience.

Does this look acceptable for a transmission rebuild? It seems high as Tommy Chong...
