Trying to find my first Disco

I have been looking for several weeks at the 2003/4 Discovery's and have recieved great feed back from this board. I found a 2004 SE 7, for $16,500 with almost 60K miles. This one is in the best shape of any I have driven/looked at. Has the 3rd row, with rear a/c, brush guard, new tires, etc. . . It has all the dealer stamps for maintenance up to 45K miles. Should I be concerned with the high mileage? How well does the drivetrain, main concern transmission hold up? I know this is dependant on trans being serviced. What should I expect to pay for 60K service, I will do this myself but want to negoiate this out of the price? The only thing I have found that does not work correctly is the ignition switch, the key requires a little force to pull out. I will have the PPI done in the morning and if everything checks out right, I will have my first Land Rover. Let me know your thoughts on this.

I bought a 2003 for my wife in June for $18,500, but Disco bring a little more money here in the Denver area than in Texjas.

BTW, the "7" in SE7 stands for 7 seats, third row.

The 2004 obviously has the CDL if that is important to you, so that is a plus compared to the 03. To be quite honest, I had no plans to offroad my 00 when I bought it, now I am going up 2", installed a CDL, and am looking for bigger tires! It is an illness!

Someone correct this if I am wrong, BUT I believe that the 60K, 90K,a nd 120K services are the major services. Do it yourself if yo have the ability, but it might be a good one to let an INDEPENDENT service rep do for you.

Thanks for your input I am taking it in for the PPI this morning. I think if all goes well, I will purchase it. I am fairly handy at auto work, just not too familiar with the land rover. So I will do most work myself. How well do the trannys hold up on these things?

trannys generally arent a problem, just regularly service it..

LRs are rather easy to work on... pick up a copy of the RAVE CD and a set of metric wrenchs/sockets and you're good to go.. oh yeah, and a lot of pb blaster and a bfh.

Just went out to look underneath the vehicle and it looks as if fresh oil is seeping from the oil pan and from the top some where. I understand all rovers leak, is something to be concerned with. You can tell it seeps a little at the rear of the valve covers. One other thing how in the world to change the plug wires, they look as if they plug in from behind the firewall? Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

So the verdict is in on the PPI. The discovery needs a new oil pan gasket $200, valve cover gasket $500, 60K service $650 and rotors/brakes $1000. It also had some body work done on it, nothing major. The dealer will not come down off the price of $16,500. So I am thinking about it. Are these the common oil leaks on these cars? Any advice?

sounds like the other 2 are better buys now or tell the seller to fix the problems and then u will buy it for the asking price. Dont buy it with problems

wait:

rotors and pads parts are only $400-$500, $1000 may be the going rate but I would never pay this for a brake job

the gaskets are cheap-how bad are the leaks? when you fill it with oil doe sit hold oil?
have we tried to cinch up the oil pan bolts or valve cover gaskets?

brakes and 60k service are wearables, not at all problems with the car

plug wires are a bitch! They can be done with small hands whilst laying across the engine. It is easier to remove the intake. btw there are two coil packs on the back of the engine where they plug in.

Cheers,

Mike

They should drop the price or fix the problems themselves. I'm sure you want this truck, it sounds nice, but dont get too impulsive and spend more than you need to. There will be more and more good deals, or better ones. Dont let the dealer stick it to ya! Good luck!

Passed on the 04 Land Rover. It had paint work done on the rear qtr panel. The job was not done very well. I am currently eyeing a couple of others. One is a 2003 SE 7, just waiting to see if they will lower the price. Will post more questions when they came up. I do appreciate all of your advice so far.

my 04 has had some paintwork too(but Only i can really tell, no one else has ever noticed or pointed it out to me, cant see it in pics either) but the frame checks out as does carfax

I , as a avid offroader, would not do an 03, and was specifically looking for the 04 with cdl (and newer abs modulator), not just any d2 with a 4.6
