In case it helps anyone else, I'll update my earlier threads on various cooling problems with my 99 DII. After replacing the water pump (which needed it anyway), then the thermostat, then the top radiator hose, then the thermostat (again), and a different hose, the culprit appears to have been located: a faulty intake manifold gasket. It only affected the vehicle under pressure, and on longer trips. The coolant would dissappear, but no leak. For what it's worth. In the course of repair, the mechanic broke something though, which I will place in another thread.
