Upgrading SLABS computer

I'm installing a diff lock on my 99 D2 and have the SLABS computer from a 2004 D2 that I want to switch with the original in mine so the traction control will work better with the diff lock. When I switch these, will I need to program the vehicle for it, clear codes, etc.? If so, what's the necessary procedure?

Thanks,

David

should be plug and play...
It should be but it won't.
When I did this on my 2000 I had to take it to Jimmie in Richmond so he could tell all the other computers that they had a new friend.

Interesing procedure, you jack up each wheel one at at time and spin it, the slabs will slow it down then brake it.
The newer slabs is a vast improvement over the older model, you won't get the faults that the earlier model where prone to.

I've swapped the SLABS from my 03 to my 99 for testing. It worked fine. The only thing I can think you might have to program would be if you actually have SLS. (or if you don't and they computer is programmed for having it).

The '03 did not have the diff-lock. That re-appeared in '04, so the SLABS should be different.

I was just saying that replacing as SLABS might not require programming. But actually the 03 slabs does support difflock, because in some markets the 03's had it. My owner's manual actually mentions the difflock as an option (even though it wasn't here).

But you are right... there is a slabs part number for 99-02, another for 03, and another for 04. but they all supercede to the 04 part number.

What exactly is the benefit of this upgrade. Just curious. Mine is an 01', and I've had Diff lock for a while. Traction control work as normal.
I did go in a do the trick where you cut one wire on the slabs so the truck doesn't disable the TC / HDC if you shut the truck off and re-start with the Diff locked.

The TC works better

Didn't we have some problem programming yours? I think that's why we had to jack the wheels up. That was a while ago!

How much are these 04" slabs going for? Used
I have a couple of used ones I'd be willing to sell. An '03 and an '04. I'll go 60.00 shipped on the '03 and 80.00 shipped on the '04. Part numbers are SRD 000150 and SRD 500070 respectively. PM me if you're interested.

I've never heard anything about this.

I may give it a shot, as I haven't pulled the system yet. I've been meaning to try to the various fixes, just for the experience. So, as long as I'm doing that, I may as well see if the '04 computer will work.

Cheers,

Kennith

First I have heard of it as well. I have the shifter from a DI, just have not gotten around to putting it in. This sounds like a good idea if it is legit.

Going from memory, the early D2's had a diff lock fitted with the light switch and signal link to the SLABS controller, but the software in the controller didn't know what to do if the diff lock was activated manually (diff lock wasn't officially fitted) so it threw a tantrum. One way around the problem was to cut the diff lock light switch wire, but that wasn't too clever as a few folks then drove around with diff locks engaged.

The later style controller has the software modified so that the difflock can be used and the TC etc still operate.

I've got the diff lock in my 98 build D2, but to be honest I've never needed more than the basic traction control, so never really bothered to look at changing anything.

If you off-road a lot, it's probably worthwhile doing the mod, otherwise don't worry about it.

No problems, if you remember, that particular SLABS had never been used. It needed to be trained.
I deal with a lot of electronics that need to be initialized before they are used.
I'm thinking now if you get a used one from an 04 you won't need to do what we did.
So I'll change my earlier statement about plug and play, if you get a SLABS from a vehicle that has the same SLS option that your vehicle has, you should be fine.
As far as price, I found my 04 SLABS on ebay for about $99 brand new.

In my 02 DII I just added the CDL linkage and a 99 T-case, truck lights up the diff lock light and T/C still works as it should.
