Welcome to the information page for the second annual Uwharrie Rover Expedition!2, URE!2. This event will be held in the Uwharrie National Forest in Central North Carolina from 21-23 October, 2005. We certainly hope that you find the information below that you need, and that you have an opportunity to join us!

What can you expect?

Led Trail Rides in the Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) area of the Uwharrie National Forest. Three levels of trail ride will be offered.

Morrow Mountain Monster--All of the trails, easiest, more difficult, and difficult will be driven at one attempt. Wannabes must sit this one out, the guide is authorized to set the pace and leave you there if you can't keep up.

Icabod Crane--easiest and more difficult trails will be driven at this effort. While we are not sure you will lose you head, it could still happen.

Great Pumpkin--An introduction to off-road driving. Only the easiest trails will be driven, but there is always the potential for damage.

It is not necessary to for you to ride in the Society led trails, these trail rides will be led by a society member who knows that trail combination. if you are unfamiliar with trails at Uwahrrie OHV, then our guides can certainly help out!

Hayrides will also be a part of this event. Friday night's ride will bring back memories of a golden age being towed down a gravel road by a vintage land rover. Saturday night's just might leave you with a struggling heart and wet pants, not for the faint of heart.

Uwharrie is a great place to drive trails at night, just be careful.

Supper, only the finest fried chicken provided by Bojangles, will be held on Saturday night with all the fixin's. Don't miss it, I can already hear arteries hardening. If you require heart healthy vegetarian fare, bring it with you. We are out to cause heart attacks! Throughout Saturday evening of the URE, at supper, and during the auction, tickets earned by registering early, and pre-paying for supper can be redeemed. Following no rhyme nor reason, the event hosts will simply draw a raffle ticket and call out a winner. Will you be one?

On Sunday morning, we will give out prizes for Best Halloween themed Camp Site, Most Rover Looking Rover, Best Hard Luck Story, and Longest Distance Drive, as well as any reason we can think of to give away left over goodies.

Early Registration will open July 1st, 2005 and continue until October 9th, 2005. Early registration will be rewarded by receiving 4 extra raffle tickets. These tickets can be redeemed at Saturday night's festivities.

In keeping with supporting America's military, this event is free to Active Duty and Reserve** members of our Armed Forces.

Consider this a family friendly event.***

Wow, this seems great! What else should I know?

Please recognize that this is a Land Rover event. While you do not have to own a Land Rover to participate, please realize that you will not be able to participate in any of the contests or win prizes while driving a non Land Rover product.

The fees for the URE are being kept as low as possible. Members of the Old North State Land Society will participate for free, while non-members are charged a registration fee. Everyone, member and non-member, must register either through the web site or at the campground. Pre registration is most helpful because it allows us to plan a little better.

The only mandatory fee, for non-members, is the registration fee, $25.00. What the Registration fee* includes is:

Campsite fee for the Group Camp for two nights for one car.

You can also simply join the Old North State buy paying the $25.00 membership dues. This would mean that your registration fee is, well, free.

The fees for riding the trails is $5.00 per day, paid for at the Outpost gas station to the Forest Service. Both members and non-members are responsible for their own trail fees.

The fee for Saturday night supper is $5.00 per person. You can expect this meal to be a chicken dinner with 2 pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, peach cobbler, and sweet tea.

Last year we had some people who arrived and participated in the trail rides enjoying the rover community, but not supporting the organization that worked to put the event together. We are not going to try and come up with a way to keep that from happening again this year. If you think that sort of behavior is appropriate, then you are a weenie and that burden is punishment enough.

*The registration fee will not be adjusted to support individual requirements

Hello:

Uwharrie Rover Expedition!2.

As we are getting closer to the event, I thought I would ask those of you considering coming to the URE! to please register and take advantage of the early registration period where extra raffle tickets are earned. We are entering the period where we are attempting to complete some of our plans and the additional information would be very helpful. I would like to point out the the URE!2 is free to all Old North State members and only $25.00 for all non-members.

A weekend can sometimes be a lot of time to commit to something in this busy age we live in, or packing the whole family up for a weekend's camping can be a strain. So I would like to point out to our members that if you can only participate for the day, please register any way and just come in on Saturday. A little rovering can go along way.

I know things are a little uncertain with the cost of fuel these days. That is why we think our very inexpensive, very close to home, event could be one of a couple very best ways to spend an October weekend. Please use this link to go directly to the registration and information web page.

Thank you very much and we hope that schedules permit you to visit with us!

Trail Report

I went to the Forest Service work day this last Saturday at Uwharrie OHV.

Short and sweet. All trails are rockier than in the past.

Rocky Mount is still moderate. The Kodak rock is very difficult. Not sure I would take a stock vehicle there.

Saw mill is moderate.

Slab pile is easy, the big mud hole has a work around, and I would use it for stock vehicles.

Falls dam is easy.

Dutch john is difficult, the long hill climb was very tough, several ATV holes have been dug during their climbing attempts. I made three attempts, then had to do some road building to sort out two cross axle sections. Longer wheel base would probably be okay.

I couldn't get to the other two, due to a time limit I had.

And what makes it worse is that there is some kind of kind of cyclical connection to the Uwharrie Safari in the spring. We are often the oposite of that event, except for the times we are not. There is also some sort of inverse relationship to SAE and MAR as well, but we haven't enough data yet to define it. :D

Great response Dan! Wish we could make this, sounds like fun, too bad it's just 2 weeks after MAR. We just can't do both in that time frame....if it were say the first or second weekend in November, that might work....have a great time anyway!

I might be able to make it out to that, depending on how school goes and what rugby matches I have to attend. I would love to go. I've always wanted to do Uwharrie trails. Keep info posted and updates. Thanks.

We set the date last October expecting MAR to be the traditional first weekend, and SAE to be the second-ish weekend in Nov. So we could be in the middle. When we found out what date MAR was going ot occur, I put it to the group to see if we wanted to change it, and everyone felt that it would cause more problems than it fixed to change the dates.

It still seems to be a good turn out is building, already more are registered than came last year, so it should be a good time. Hopefully we will put together an story for Old Reliable and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks

Im new on this board, and no i dont drive a land rover product...but i believe that i met you (Dan Ratcliffe) at URE a feww weekends ago. I drive a lifted explorer, and i believe that i ran into you a few times out there that day. (I was in the green one) Now on to the run. I would possibly be interested, if that would be cool to come out and wheel. Dont know for sure yet since ill be going for the next two weekends in a row, but i would sure try and come out if thats cool. Its no D90, but it can keep up (locked in the rear, 31s, 3 inches of lift, etc.) Just let me know if it wouldnt be a hassle to have me come along. (of course i would pay the fees). Thanks and happy wheeling.

You can certainly come along. But you won't be able to win prizes based on any driving events, and you will need to be able to take all the ribbing you will get for your choice of vehicle, but you are certainly welcome.

haha, believe me...i am used to the ribbing and the "what the hell is that thing doing up here". Im used to it, and i let the driving speak for itself. I completely understand the prizes deal, and like i said i wont know for sure if i can run this trip for at least another week. Is there a cut-off date for sign up?

Yeah, there is a pre registration sign up, but it should not stop any one from showing up. It just means that because we cut every thing close to the bone, to keep the price so low, there might not be enough shirts and stickers and what not for the late arrivals.

Come on along.

ok, ill see what i can do. Another question (sorry so many) but what kind of rigs are expected to be out there, heavily modified; mild; or stock. Im trying to figure out which class to put myself in. I can run all the trails out there, except i wasnt able to make the ledge on daniel due to not wanting to damage my rockers. I will be locked by this run so that will help. Since ive seen your rig, what classification would you consider it in comparison to the others that are expected to arrive? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Well,

Up to now, we have forty five people coming to URE!

Next week, shirts and meals will be ordered, the supporters are sending items almost every day now, RoversNorth is sending a vehicle all the way down from Vermont, some of our regional service centers are offering discounts for serivce, and it looks like the leaves will turn just at the right moment.

Again, I would like to point out the the URE!2 is free to all
Old North State members and only $25.00 for all non-members. (If you pay for membership at registration, the URE! is still free.) Please use this link to go directly to the registration and information web page.

Hopefully we will see you there!
