Use SLS Pump for On-Board Air?

Hello all:

I recently converted to coil instead of SLS in the rear of my 2001 DII and I am interested in whether I can use the SLS Pump as an on-board air supply. I just don't see a reason to buy another compressor or PowerTank unless I have to.

Does anybody know the specifications or where to find them for the SLS Compressor?
Has anyone heard of this done before? Is it possible/feasible?

Thanks in advance.

have you done a search on this site? I remember asking the same questions last year in a post. Basically I think the concensus is that it would be an extremely slow means of airing up tires. I never did find the specs for the pump. I would say just hook it up and test it out then let us all know.

Yes, I did a search but came up empty.

I guess I'll just give it a try and see what happens. With all the customization discussed on this forum I can't believe nobody has done this before.

I will post back here my results sometime in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if anybody reads this thread who has any insight, please share.

I use an air compressor and a pair of reservoirs from a Range Rover EAS sytem on my DiscoI It will inflate 2 tires from 15 to 45 but the recovery time of the system is inadequate. I use it to complement my 20lb aluminum powertank -type system. And to inflate soccer balls.

it will be extremely slow but possible. I went off-roading with some friends that one was using their arb on-board air supply while I have a powertank. I finished filling my 4 tires, another disco 4 tires, and then help him finish off his last 1 or 2 tires (I can't remember).

My recommendation would be spend the money and get a powertank.

If time isn't an issue then I'd say use what's already there. If I had one I'd have tried it awhile ago. I tried to talk Stansell into it awhile ago but he never got around to doing it. Definately let us know if you do it.

Thats cuz I saw a Powertank in action: now I can't settle for less

(and it looked like kinda of a bitch to do up right)

Jamooche

You know how to do this?
If you know could you tell us how to do it?
Although you said it takes for hours, but at least I will have some thing to
inflate the tires.
Let me know if you can.

SoCo,

Another thought is that the SLS pump is an intermittant pump; so not only will it be very slow, it probably will not like constant duty operatoins. Guessing (based on small pumps from Kragen or Autozone) that it will take 30-45 minutes minimum to inflate four tires from 15# to 35#. The pump will likely overheat (as it doesn't have air flow over the body of the pump nor visible cooling coils or fins).
