Using cigar lighter for accessory power?

I've tried the search, but without success, so I have to bore you with what is probably a dumbass question: Why can't I use the cigar lighter in my '00 D2 to power a cell phone adapter or maplight or anything else for that matter? The lighter itself works, so I know there's juice there. What am I missing?

Cigar lighter is deeper than your plugs. Either push in further or give up. :D

I've had no issues in my '03 and Stansell with a '99 DII also doesn't. I agree, push it in farther that always works in my house :D

The plug up front (at least in a Range Rover) is a different voltage than the ones in the back & center. Using the actual cigar lighter to charge a cell phone will frequently blow the fuse. The accessory plug in the rear of the DII can handle higher voltage. Your accessories may be refusing to work becuase they sense the difference in voltage. Or you just need to push harder or pull the little metal prongs out further :D

A difference in voltage. Hmmm. In all my years of electronics theory and car mechanics, I have never run into a different voltage in cars. 12-14 vdc is typical. You might mean a difference in current. Your cigar lighter is rated at 10 amps, Usually. You might see if the accessories you are using have fuses inside the cigar plug. I think those might be blown first. They usually have "fast" blow fuses unlike the regular fuse in your panel under the dash.

I run a gps unit, laptop for gps, and maplight all on the front lighter plug.

I had to go with an extreme mod to get my radar detector to plug in properly.. i got a small piece of paper, folded it, put it right on the side of the plastic on the plug i was plugging in to make it a snug fit.. works great. its not touching any real place where there is metal on metal so i'm not too concerned about a fire hazard [although im sure people will disagree with me].. but its on the bottom, so its not visible, and it works fine.

Push it in further, eh?

... okay, I'll give that a try. I just knew this was going to be the stupid question of the week... thanks, all!

A friend who worked at radio shack told me to do that.. but when I went to a store [that he didnt work at], they denied the fact that something like that exisisted.. thats when i got fed up and tried using a piece of paper, and it worked fine :)
