Land Rover began importing Discoverys into the US in '94. The '94-'95 years are OBD-1 Discoveries, with 3.9-liter V8 engine that uses a distributor. In '96, they changed to using the OBD-II ECU system on the 4.0-liter V8, which is distributorless. There were other differences between the '94-'95 Discoveries and the '96-'98 ones, like the turn-signals, the radio antenna, etc. etc., minor things compared to the OBD-II system. In '99, the production line ceased making that generation of the Discovery, and began making the Discovery II. (See the post elsewhere regarding how to spot the differences). The big difference between the D1 and the D2 is that the D2 is actually 7-inches longer in the back end in the storage area, the D2 gained a lot of electronics but lost the CDL (center differential locking).

As production on the last of the earlier Discoveries was wrapping up, there were some upgrades left over. Since they couldn't be used on the new generation of D2 ones, they loaded up the last of the earlier ones. Prior to '99, the SD was usually the base package. In '99, the SD was the last of the earlier-style of Discovery, essentially the left-over '98 ones, with extras thrown-in. The other models that year are all D2s.

I've yet to see a '99 SD that didn't have leather, heated seats, CD changer, or woodgrain trim. However, I don't believe I've ever seen a '99 SD with factory sunroofs.

FWIW.....
