Vacuum Advance Unit Fell Out.

My '87 won't start or even sputter. I looked under the hood and the vacuum advance unit was hanging by the hose. Does the arm on the unit keep the internal plate from recoiling enough that it would cause me to have a spark too far off to start the vehicle?

Any time I have touched the vacuum advance I have had to adjust the timing. You can run without a working vacuum advance.
