Does anyone have any tips on changing the valve cover gaskets on a 99.5 DII? I loosened the two bolts I could see yesterday just to see what all would be involved(I didn't have time to actually perform the job) but there seems to be something unseen holding it down on the engine side.

I believe you need to take off the intake plenum to get to the bolts on the engine side. It is a bit more involved on the BOSCH engine. I just tightened up the valve cover bolts I could get to and they stopped leaking...

The Intake has to come off,,,get a new gasket before,,,also ,if you want to make it nice, get a throttle body gasket as well[very inexpensive].And further on, think ahead, just in case the plug wire set ready for a change in the near future, better do it while the plenum is off, otherwise you will cry yourself to sleep for a few days...

Happy Days!

The cover is not a piece of crappy pressed sheet metal, four bolts are just enough.
