For groundhogs, .22Mag would be my choice (then again I already own one...) They're fun to shoot and relatively inexpensive. Plus off of the bipod at the range on Friday I put 25 rds into the 10-ring (4" radius) at 100 yards to the point of boredom.

who cares about loudness anyways?

Remington 700 VS-SF in 220 Swift.

actualy
i do

it drives all the game away for miles.
in most countries other than USA silencers are leagal.
for many reasons
1)your personel protection HEARING.
2)Allows you to make more than one kill ,the rest of the herd wont realize there buddy went down so they stick around.
some hunting saffaris in Afrika wont allow a non silenced rifle .
you must be silenced or use a bow.
they dont want to drive the game away.game is money.

im having my new mod 700 22-250 PS barrell threaded so when i go back to theKaroo for springbok i dont have to chase the herd after every shot.
im buying my silencer in Finland and shipping it to Afrika to stay legal.

those finns silence everything, even shotguns. i wish it was that easy here. i've been considering getting a silencer for my .300 fireball ar-15. getting the cleo to sign off on class III weapons ins't a big deal in my area, even got a clas III dealer 5 min form my house but they never have anything that interests me

My 700 VS-SF has a ported barrel. It is extremely loud at the range since those ports direct some of the sound sideways. I have no idea if that makes it any quieter downrange at all, & I'm not going to find out. :)

It ain't fancy and does the above, not too bad for a $150 used rifle....

Danny, I don't want to sound like a jerk, but you are bragging about 8" groups at 100 yards? (Assuming you really meant radius)

Yeah yeah, radius, diameter, same damned difference. And for a cheap .22Mag on a open, windy range, a 4 power scope, and a cold barrel I felt it did dang good. Not to mention I only shoot targets 3-4 times a year. So yes, I was bragging and I did mean diameter, not radius, you jerk :victory:

Now if I had a target barrel, a calm range, non-Wal-Mart cheapo rounds and more practice time with that rifle, then I wouldn't be so soon to "brag". But I make do with what I've got, and a replacement scope with more power (that matches the stainless of the rifle instead of mismatched gloss black :puke:). Besides, the rifle works just fine for squirrels, and I rarely miss critters.......

The picture died, here it is again

for 100yard shots 4x is plenty of scope. more people should learn to shoot iron sights good before straping a scope on every rifle they own. a good aperture rear & hooded front will give 2" groups at 100yds with very little practice, i also shoot better offhand with irons than scopes. i love taking one of my $100 milsurps to the range & watching everyone stare in amazement at my 1-2" groups with no optics. my swiss k31 will go under 1" if i do my part & my finn m91 will hold 2" with anything but wolf ammo. my 2.5x scoped columbian mauser 30-06 will do 3/4" groups with $5 a box barnaul ammo. unless your shooting for score or very small targets i think scopes are over rated & to many people use them as a crutch

I'd also think about a carbine in a caliber you might also have a pistol in, ie: 357 mag, 9mm, 45acp. rifles are made in just about all these calibers now, and that way you only have to buy shells for one caliber. for instance, Im lookin at gettin the 9mm upper for my AR15 so that I have plenty of rounds for a few pieces, And yes, the 3 rounds listed will do more than enough damage at that range. check out a keltec sub2000 nice little folding carbine that will take S&W, beretta or glock mags.

Just my .02

also think about the 17mach2, or just a good 22mag for anything out to 125-150 yds.
