Vents blowing oily steam

'95 RRC LWB - very end of a 1.5 hour trip in 90 degree weather, a/c on the whole way. In the last 5 minutes of driving, the vents blew some steam/smoke and the a/c was no longer blowing cold. There was not a lot of steam/smoke and it was not sweet smelling. It did leave an oily residue on the vents. Pulled off to the side of the road, shut the truck down and popped the hood. Had my daughter in the truck and wanted to ensure there was not an actual fire (didn't smell like one and was sure there wasn't). Confirmed everything looked good, nothing blown, no leaks. Got back in the truck and started it up but turned the a/c off and left it off for the 5 minute drive home. No more steam/smoke. I have a slight coolant loss, but nothing substantial. The truck temp gauge did not move above half and I am pretty sure the gauge works as about a week prior I let it idle in 90 degree temps with a/c on for a good 30 min and it did spike before I shut it off.

I have had a vehicle blow a heater core before and definitely not the same experience as that. Would a heater core be leaky and just let a little slip past? Could this be the a/c compressor gone bad and blowing oil? Any other ideas? Thanks.

I had a 97 Disco that did the same thing every time I had the ac on high for a long period, not sure what the cause was. I recharged the system with new coolant and that seemed to take care of the problem.

Check the AC vents (rubber tubes) under the truck on both sides of the transmission tunnel. Sqeeze the end of the tubes. If water comes out, they were plugged.
