Vinyl hose for coolant drain?

Greetings folks,

I'm getting ready to flush my cooling system, and I have heard that, instead of pulling the lower radiator hose, vinyl tubing can be inserted down the upper radiator plug hole and then the other end of the vinyl tubing can be sucked-on until the coolant begins to flow. Of course, once it's flowing, I can cease sucking on the tube and can allow physics to continue to drain the coolant through the hose.

Does this sound like a legitimate process? Has anyone used this method, and does it work?

Afterwards, I'm going to remove the thermostat and gasket to continue with the flushing process. If the gasket is in decent shape, is it re-usable, or is it a one-shot deal?

Thanks!

On a D1/RRC/Defender I always just stick a small hose down into the radiator fill plug and do a siphon until it drains everything. It works well.

Yes. You and Jimmy are describing the same process. I do the same and it saves coolant from going everywhere when removing the lower hose.

YES!. 1/2" OD hose will fit. As Fish wrote, it saves you from making a royal mess.
