Range rover Viscous coupler

Hi All,

Question on a 89 Range Rover

I guy I know was having problems with his CV Joints so he took the drive shaft off to stop the noise. He says that he drives it 4x2 now, and that the car drives just fine. My question is, is the Range rover Viscous coupler bad at this point? What are the consecuenses of drivng 2WD on a range when you have taken the shaft off???

Thanks,

I don't see how removing the front driveshaft would help eliminate CV joint noise as the front tires will still be rotating and turning when you are driving. Are you sure it is the CV? If you removed the front driveshaft and that eliminated the noise then it could be the VC is toast or some other problem. Were the tires scrubbing or chirping when doing tight turns before removal of DS? I would not drive long in 2wd as it means that the VC will be constantly locked, and that generates alot of heat in the VC and thus a chance of premature wear. But if it is already toast and in the locked position then it will probably be okay. VC's are not cheap. Get if checked out before you do more damage. Hopefully some others here with more knowledge will chime in.
