Viscous Fan

Hello,

I have a 1998 Disco I with 80k on the clock. There is this fan that used to drop out when I would get up to about 30 mph. I am assuming that this is the viscous fan. The fan speed seemed to be connected to engine speed until it disengaged or at least slowed down to the point that it was no longer audiable. The problem is now that it is not dropping out it is hard connected to the engine speed at all speeds. I have been driving it around very carefully because I dont want the fan to degrade and mess up the radiator or something. I get some strange looks if I have to put my foot down for anything because it makes such a noise.

Should I just replace the whole viscous assembly, or is there something I should look at first?

Thanks very much for your time!

James
