We have had a 2003 V70 2.4T which was not too bad (just barely good enough for us to get another Volvo) and a 2006 V70 XC which is a gas guzzling piece of shit.

Get a Subaru.

I drive a v40 t4, the smallest series. Under the skin, the body is from Mit. Lancer. Decent power and mpg, 1/2 highway and city is roughly 12 liter per 100 km (20 mpg) But that thing is small, kind of like a honda civic. U want something bigger then it will be the s/v 70 then the 80 series. older one will be 850, 740 940 series. but older cars... mpg suffer. Also check the prices of parts. Here in HK, parts for Volvo are more expensive than MB and BMW. Turbo charge one is better than non turbo, as the non-turbo is under power, and the mpg for turbocharge is not that bad, as the transmission will upswift earlier and all the power comes at under 2500rpm, but all depend on your driving habit.
And besides changing oil, all I had done for maintenance are brake pads every 9 months, one electric fan, temp sensor, one rear wheel bearing and 3 sets of tires in 6 years.

My wife drives an 04' XC 70. Its a great car to drive and ride in but just like a rover it can nickel and dime you into the food stamp line.

Buy it. All the cool Rover owners have a volvo next to an always broken rover........... I picked up my 850 for around 2k last year and have driven it all over the place. In fact I put 1500 miles on it in 2 weeks and it runs like a champ!

My wife has (had) an '04 S80 (2.5T AWD) for about a year. Great car, no complaints, just oil and air filter changes. Wanna buy it?

Just bought a demo '08 Yukon XL for more room (we've got 3 kids). So the S80 is up for sale.

S= Sedan V= Stationwagon.
S40 is sedan and V40 is the wagon version of the 40 series
S60 is the sedan
S/ V70 just sedan and wagon of the 70 series( replaced the 850)
S80 much bigger version of the S60.
In the US, the 40 series gets the 1.9 turbo charge which had 160 HP.
T4 200HP ( only in Europe and Asia)
a 1.9L non-turbo as well, 130 hp but don't remember whether the US got it.
Although the 40 series is small, but it got everything on it. and the 40 series is the only volvo with a 4 cylinder, rest is 5 cylinder, and s80 gets a 6 cylinder. I think the newer volvo got a V8 as well, but I don't have the info, busy keeping track of the rover stuff, and lost track with the volvo.

Acutally all those engine configure are from one engine, by increasing the bore and adding or taken out the cylinders.

The current S40/ V50 give up the 4 cylinder engine, and use a 2.5 cylinder engine, in my view, there might be an issue with the 4 banger.

I actually like my v40 year 98 ,but I just hate the maintenance as parts is so expensive here.

S60 is more or less like a sport sedan.

Yeah, I know they are the sedans....2 people I work with have the AWD S60s. I was just wondering about reliability, etc. I've always liked that body style. Not a big fan of the little S40s.

The 40 is really small, if it isn't the oil price, I would grab the keys to the volvo. The good side is they are very well build.
In terms of reliability, they all should be pretty much the same, as they are the same machine under different skins. Not a lot of people appreciate the style of the volvo sedan, especially on the c-pillar, but it is pretty unique.

Minor point: Some of the S80s got 6 cylinders (some with turbo (T6), some without(2.9)), others got the 2.5L 5 cyclinder (T5).

Forgot to add about the AWD. My wife drove it through one of the worst winters MI has seen in a long time, and had no problems driving in snow, etc. It's a great car. We get about 21/22 mpg on average (city and hwy).

If we didn't have to try and cram three kids in the back seat, we'd be keeping it, but our sanity means it has to go.
