Yesterday my belt came off my pulleys on my 04 Disco 2 with a 4.6. The belt looked warn so I thought maybe it jumped off because it had gotten loose.
But in looking at the pulleys I noticed the water pump shaft has some wiggle to it, making that pulley move a little forwards and back. Does it sound like I need to just get a new water pump? Do those shafts have slack like that?

should be no play in the WP pulley. Take a look at your other pulleys while your at it to. The factory idler pulley on the passenger side is made of plastic and always fails at some point. Replacements are metal and cheap.

You got lucky to make it home. Once that belt pops off or break that means the car will drain the battery and start running on the alternator. I would say its time for a new water pump. The current one is on its way out. Ask me how I know :)

Actually we did not make it home. Had to have it towed on a flat bed.

Sorry to hear.
When mine happened I had just got off the highway and was about 4 miles from home when I heard a pop sound (belt breaking) followed by a burning smell and smoke (belt friction burning against a pulley) coming into the cabin, the battery light was on and I just made it home.

I next day I put a new belt on her and noticed the water pump pulley had a wobble. Starter her up with the new belt and within a minute or two the water pump exploded.

If the water pump pulley has a wobble its time for a water pump.
