If they close Solihull it'll be a sad day.

We knew this was coming; I thought it'd be a plant in India.

(waits for the 'maybe we'll get new Defenders!' cream job)

"Why should you want to know?
Don't you mind about the future!"

There is plenty of good Rovers around to keep me afloat for another 10-15 years.
By the way, Chinese auto quality is even worse than Russian.

Plus within two months of opening the factory over there, the chinese will have reverse engineered every piece of machinery in the plant and will be cranking out cheap ass low quality counterfit parts by the millions.

Typical they go to the cheapest manufacturing environment on the planet to build an uber expensive luxury automobile.

For $100k I want it built by British Coachmakers not by coolies.

The Chinese will build the quality you pay them for.
Look at nearly all your consumer electronics from even the higher end manufactorers, they are nearly all made in China.
India has replaced China as the makers of cheap shit followed by Pakistan.

I seem to recall an article about LR wanting to offer a lower end, more utilitarian, line of vehicles. The report hinted that the current product line had become too complex and too pricey. Considering how long it will take to bring a manufacturing facility in China on-line, maybe the strategy is to build the utilitarian vehicles in China and the current vehicles in Britain.

Time will tell.

Nothing in the line up suggests that they are backing away from high end, high tech vehicles. Tata did not buy LR and Jag for access to the low end of the market, they bought them to gain access to the top end of the market.

Dont underestimate the technical advances indian engineers will cough out

curry makes ya smart

(not sure what happened to me)

I suspect we will see both high and low end products once chinese labor drives down the overheads vs. UK

FYI ....

Land Rover, Revamping Itself To Become More Utilitarian AND Distance Itself From RR?
Autospies

The future of Land Rover
Autocar

....The idea is to reposition Land Rover closer to its utility roots, a move that will create more space between the brand and Range Rover. Today?s cars overlap too much ? the Discovery is in essence a seven-seat Range Rover ? and the forthcoming Range Rover LRX will tread on the Freelander?s toes.....

....The existence of the seven-seat Range Rover Sport tells us a lot about the thinking on the post-2014 Discovery, too. The first seven-seat Range Rover will take over where today?s Discovery leaves off.

But there is also an idea to make a new seven-seat Discovery closer to the 1989 original. Based around the new Project Icon/Defender platform, it would be rugged and mechanically relatively simple, but more luxurious than the Defender, while being far more workmanlike than its Range Rover siblings.

More importantly, it would be designed to appeal to a global audience, particularly in developing countries and the BRICs: Brazil, Russia, India and China. The latter is already Land Rover?s third-biggest market after the UK and US. Success with the Icon Project and the Defender/Discovery might ultimately make it the biggest.....

Project Icon would most likely be the first vehicle built in China.
