Weird power seat issue?

Ok,

Before I get chance to get my codes checked, my power seats are acting very strange.

The control knobs will not move the seats at all, but if you move the drivers seat controls, it will adjust the power mirrors? Anyone ever experience that issue? Seems odd, doesn't it?

I know there is going to be lots of potential issues, cuz the P.O. put in a custom stereo system. I don't think it was installed very well. Who knows what they spliced into.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Josh

Never heard of this except for in RRCs in which its a very common problem. 93-95 classics have a memory seat ECU and after some time moisture will ruin the circuit board. You can try and find a good ecu somewhere, but its pretty unlikey. However, there is a place in the UK that is repairing them and when its all said and done I think it costs around $700. What we typically do is take the seat wiring out of an earlier RRC and bypass the ecu. Its a very simple fix, but this will leave you with no power mirrors.

I have two memory seat ECUs that I am having refurbished at the moment, it looks like it will be at least two more weeks but send me an email then and remind me of this thread and I will cut you a nice discount.

I had the same issue with my 95 SWB. Pulled the ECU without removing the seat, which was a total pain, and sent it off to a repair facility in GB. Total came to around $200, as I could not really find a replacement very easily (though I finally did through an eBay vendor). It's the seat memory battery that causes the problem-- it eventually leaks onto the mother board. Best to refurbish your unit, at least in my opinion, as they all eventually reach the stage where the battery begins to leak. BTW, I did try to replace the battery on my own, which requires careful soldering, but the leakage had fouled the board, so a new battery did not solve the issue. Good luck. This was one of the most painful failures on my Rover; I would have gladly paid a king's ranson for some simple manual seats. When the board goes on these things, it can basically render your truck undriveable.

Can you adjust the seat using the power mirror controls?

Just bought a 95 RRC, same problem -- seat buttons moving mirrors -- how f'd up is that? Both seats all the way up; getting rug burn on my noggin.... Looks like those ECU's will be a hot item. There are two under there, I assume it is the "upper" one as it appears to have the seat wiring going into it. The lower one has a twin on the passenger side as well...not sure what they are. Fixin' to get it out and send it off I reckon.

Seat ECU is light grey box with an orange peel-like finish. There is usually a sticker over the box's seam that says something like "Warranty Void if Broken"-- hardly a concern at this point.

Thanks man. I got it out and took it apart...sho' nuff...battery leakage--corrosion central. I cleaned it a bit and the passenger seat started sort of working...nothing on the drivers...but the mirror quit moving! I'm going to take it back down and clean some more, but it looks like a repair/replace is in order. You happen to have the info handy on the supplier you found on ebay?

Well, I am glad I posted. It sounds like 1, this is a common problem, and 2, that it can be EXPENSIVE! As soon as I get done with my bathroom remodel project. I am getting that seat torn apart. I am lucky. My seats are stuck ALL the way back. I am short, but I just stretch out "gangsta" style.

Cheers mates.

find the RAVE cd downloads online. They will greatly help you.

The later seats with memory control the position of the mirrors too. So moving the seat control and having the outside mirrors move isn't wierd. But it's all in the seat ECU. If yours is too far corroded, hit up one of our used parts suppliers for a replacement. Also, search here for tips on cleaning the contacts within the seat switches. Be careful of flying springs when taking them apart. corrosion there is the most common failure of seat adjustment.

I bought a '95 "parts" truck, a LWB, that turns out to be too nice to part out!

But the driver's seat control would only jack me forward and bent over the wheel, until I wiggled the control a bit and got it to move back to a driveable position. Now I'm afraid to touch it.

Would it be adviseable at this point, while they ARE working, to take the controls apart and clean them, AND replace that ECU battery? Preventive maintenance? Or am I likely to break something that ain't broke?
