how much work do you want to do? Any axle swap is gonna be a BIG investment in time and depending on what axle you use, MONEY...If I were to do again, I'd go with a custom housings from these guy's:
http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Ballistic-9-Housings_c_123.html

Aschcroft is building a bolt on kit, it's not ready but it a Ford 9" in a rover housing:
http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=761100

Portals have been done by a couple guy's, search over on pirate, Greg Davis is did it here...

If you were to keep the rover housing, I'd go with Keith's shit from Rovertracs...it's proven and bombproof. Put's a toy 3rd in the existing housing, giving you better gear selection and the ability to run a 37...of course the suspension needs MAJOR mods for that big of a tire...

my rear has the GB hd's and a detroit and has NEVER had an issue i just keep braking the front long side. twice a season to be exact...I just wand something stronger and cheaper to fix for the front on 35's.I like the portals or unimogs for the clearance

I keep hearing people never having trouble with rear HD Rover Axles and 35" tires which leads me to believe that unless your running some kind of dedicated crawler with 37" tires the rear Toy conversion may be overkill.

well just toss in some rcv fronts and be done...lots of guys running 35's without issues.

no kiddin' Thom...a axle swap is in no way, shape or form cheaper than the RCV fronts...even the toy swap is cheaper and a thousand times easier

anyone ever run 44's front and rear?? I found a set for a sweet price w/ 4:10's. and as far as price by the time I sell my 3rd/shafts/links/rims I can buy up all I need and have money to lock the front. all the fabbing wont be a problem

it's not any stronger than the rover with the RVC front cv's...

Calling Peter, where are you Peter? Personally I don't think the 44's are any stronger than Rover stuff with HDs in them. I don't have personal experience with it though. This has been discussed here often. Search I know I remember a long thread dealing with this option.

Cheers,

Mike

Currently on the Rovota set-up with 4.88s and Jac Mac axles and Longfield Chromo CVs...have had good success with them on the 42s...(soon to be replaced with rockwell 2.5s)

Two reasons I am going RW2.5:
1. The truggy/buggy/thingy they will go on will be 95% offroad (legal concerns in Lebanon aren't that many...)
2. I want/need/desire/can't-sleep-without rear steer

And yes, they are uber cheap...

That said, my "new to me" 1998 Disco (mint condition prior to my brother borrowing it and putting it on it's side) will recieve the current plethora of equipment on the truggy (OME suspension, Rovota axles, wheels, etc...) and run the said 4.88s with 36" Iroks...that'll be the "family rig", "daily driver", "camping hauler", what have you...

So in short:
-If you plan to have any safe street driving, the Rovota is probably best
-100%, your options become wider, cheaper and stronger

I have a D44 in the front of my '72 Bronco, 4.56's, detroit lockers front and rear, 351W, 36" swampers and break the front axle joints on a regular basis (every summer). They always take the ears off the axle shaft too. I have aftermarket HD axleshafts, but can't remember the brand off hand.

Never broken the 9" in the back.

The 9" seems to be the "flavor of the month" so to speak. Ashcroft is playing with one and the Spidertrax seems popular.

Again. Most people here who have HD ROVER stuff up front and up to 35" tires really don't have a lot of problems.
