What could it be?

1999 DII 84K miles.
For the past two weeks, the truck has been giving me intermitent problems. First time it happend, I was on the freeway at normal speed (60-70mph) when in my periferal vision, I saw a dashborad light light up for a brief moment then immediately after the engine reved up for a quick second. Then this past week, I had the Manual and Sport mode lights blinking and terrible perfornamance. Took it in for a battery inspection and had the battery replaced. The M and S lights are gone but I keep getting the ocasional "light-rev"sequence described above. The light blinks so quickly that I can't gell which light it is, but it is somewhere near the number 2 on the Tachometer; I think it is the service engine or check engine light but not 100% sure.

The trucks runs fine otherwise, and it is completely stock.

any ideas?
thanx

Same thing happened to me a month ago, from the sound of it I had the same symptoms. I have a 99 DII with about 108,000 miles on her. I took it to the shop and had the codes read, what came up was an engine code and a general transmission fault code. It ended up being the crank sensor, it cost me $145 for the repair.

Also after driving it for about 8 miles the transmission would go into a limp home mode which your transmission is stuck into 3rd gear when it is sensing a problem.

Good luck!!

I hope it is the $145 fix. I'm having guy come over with a ODB-II code reader, hopefully he gives me good news.
My DII does not go into limp mode, the battery replacement fixed that problem.

What is the crank sensor anyway? and is it something I can take care of my self or is it a mechanic only fix?
thanx

Pretty easy fix to do yourself - probably get away with about 60-75 for the sensor and about 30-45 minutes..... Check the Rave for specifics.

if that's what it is. Hope it is!

I'm pretty sure it is an easy install I just didn't have the time to deal with it so I had my mechanic take care of it. I had the exact same symptoms the S&M lights were flashing and every so often the truck would throw a light which was so fast I could not see which one it was and every time it flashed the truck would rev up real quick then back to normal. Also The lights were flashing red on the gear selector when it was in drive mode.

I never had an issue with the battery nor did I replace it so I hope this is your problem. Good luck with the fix and please post your results.

Status update: The code reader did not detect any codes (it is a high-end Snap-on ODB-II diagnositic tool); and today after my friend talked to a land rover mechanic and described the symptoms, the LR mechanic is agreen with you guys, that the crank sensor might be the cause; and he even mentioned that the ECU would not record the malfunction, thus the reader is not detecting anything.
I'm going to replace the senso today or tomorrow and hopefully that fixes it.
Will post results...
My battery needed replacement, I had it for about 5 years..and it tested bad.

Great!
very detailed picture.
Removed and replaced; will give a status after I drive it for a few miles.
It would have been much easier, had I had thiner arms, the exahust is in the way and the connector is hard to get to.
But if anyone is having the same problem I described, this is a do DYS job; even if you are as mechanichally challenged as I am.
